I agree. The pumpkin smasher should be charged with tresspassing. Karen handled the situation well when she decided to join Hannie in the strangest looking pumpkin.

I felt so sad for them when that happened, I wish Karen brought Kong inside, it's not like it would have blown up overnight, and it's really nice she still won a prize

I was looking forward to reading a Halloween LS I hadn't read before, but this one was really boring. And the ending--Karen thinking about planting Kong's seeds so they would have his "children" the next Halloween? Seriously?

Is this the one where the kids go out and celebrate Mischief Night the night before Halloween? That's not something I ever heard of, but I grew up in Montana and Wikipedia seems to show that Mischief night is a tradition in only some parts of the U.S. I was a bit surprised at that aspect of the story. Normally it seems like something the parents of Stoneybrook would have completely disallowed.
I really liked the bit in this book where Karen is selling pumpkins to her classmates. I thought it was cute. I also liked Pamela being snotty and choosing the tiniest pumpkin. Pamela makes me laugh.

If Mischief Night is the night before Halloween then what are you supposed to do on Halloween?

If Mischief Night is the night before Halloween then what are you supposed to do on Halloween? Trick or treat. I had never heard of Mischief Night either, scrounge, because I grew up in the south and it seems to be more of a tradition in the east. It came up again in Stacey and the Haunted Masquerade, with Cary and his "Mischief Knights." Oh, and Karen and her friends wrote "hello" in shaving cream on the sidewalk...yeah.

I know you trick or treat on Halloween night, but I guess I'm used to people doing the bad mischief stuff the same night. I like Halloween, but it doesn't need to be a two day event!

Oh, those rebels. First they're writing hello on the sidewalk in shaving cream, next they'll be robbing banks.

It's too bad with what happened with Kong. Karen should've just brought him inside. I like that Karen sold her classmates the pumpkins.

It was a sweet book, but I felt very sad about the 'Smashing Pumpkins' getting Kong

Mischief Night occurs where I am. I thought it was odd how Ann was trying to talk about the reality of Mischief Night while at the same time tring to play a "moral card" by having Karen and her friends go out on Mischief Night but not do any "serious" damage. (i.e. - shaving cream on the sidewalk and egg on the road or something).
Also, that's terrible that people actually broke into the backyard and smashed the pumpkins. I'm surprised that Karen didn't decide to sleep outside *that* night -- or at least keep guard with her family.

She should have just brought Kong inside, what difference would one day have made? The oddly shaped pumpkin sounded cute though and I'm glad she got a prize than nothing at all.
Or better yet, she should have just entered a salad preparation contest virgo! LOL

^ LOL! You're totally right on both accounts (that she should have brought the pumpkin inside and the salad prep comment). But doesn't she say some lame comment about how it might grow overnight? And that she won't be in the Guiness Book of Records?
This is one of my favourite autumn LS books. I like when Karen describes Indian Summer; the day when she sees the pumpkin smashed on the sidewalk, thinks its Kong, and goes out to find him and there's frost on the ground but during the day it warms up and turns hot out, so hot that she wants to sleep outside (unsuccessfully).
