I'm very surprised there isn't a thread for this one yet - classic BSC! What with Claudia's highly logical spelling of Pharoah (or 'farrow' as she spelt it, feeling uber intellectual when she added on one of those "killer silent letters" ;D), the introduction of Ashley Wyeth and the BSC in ultimate bitchy mode. The BSC are rather bitchy and hypocritical in this book as they condemn Claudia for making a friend outside the club - short sheeting her bed, eating her snacks, hiding them, writing 'mean' notes, in Dawn's case making up rhymes (the infamous 'Traitor traitor Claudia we hate 'er!' rhyme), bitching about Ashley's fashion sense (god they're ones to talk, especially consdiering what Stacey and Claudia often wear )... real mature you guys. I agree that Ashley was kinda odd with her art obsession and inability to have a friend (you can tell by the way she hangs up on Claud that she's rubbish at keeping friends)... hehe her over dramatic nature is amusing though - "You're ruining your career you know!" Then amusingly, Mary Anne responds with "Woah, intense." And this is from the girl who ran out on her own bday party and said "I wish you'd get out of my life... FOREVER!" Great wit from Stacey - "In my breadbox of friends, you are a CRUMB." ;D Oh and essence of intrigue in Mary Anne's note to Claudia - "Claudia you're sitting for Nina and Eleanor Marshall on Friday from 3:30-6:00" OMG, a sitting job during meeting times!!!

There isn't a thread for this book? How weird! I agree it's a classic! In a way I really like Ashley, she's so passionate. I agree the girls are ridiculous sometimes (which is funny too ). I mean I know they're 13, but behaving like that in Claudia's room!! That's just extremely impolite and I think it would never happen later on in the series. I wish we would see more of Ashley after this book, she only appears really shortly and random. I loved her on the front cover. That skirt! Fantastic

I liked this book a lot too. It was cool to see Claudia have a different friend outside of the club. Even though the BSC's antics towards were immature, I still found them funny because I could see myself doing something like that when I was 13 sadly.

I thought there was a thread for this book but I must have been wrong. Maybe I was just going to post on it and never got around to it I LOVE the "Farrow" spelling logic - it's my favorite Claudia dumb moment. I think the fight is pretty funny in this one too, though I can understand why the girls felt a little left out of Claudia's new friendship with someone who shared her "passion" for art. I haven't read this one for a while so I'd better not say anymore until I reread and refresh my memory I wouldn't mind doing that since I like this one pretty well.

That's weird, I could have sworn there was a thread for this book. Maybe I'm thinking of the Ashley thread in Other Characters, though. I really like this book and I really like Ashley. She seemed cool, I love hippie chicks! "Traitor, traitor, Claudia we hate 'er!" is classic and hilarious. The girls were such bitches in this book, going into Claudia's room and doing all of that stuff. If I were her I wouldn't have let them back in there after that. Psychos! Good eye on the note from Mary Anne! I never noticed that before. I wonder what Kristy had to say about that...

omg, seriously. She seemed so indifferent about it. I suppose she didn't care about privacy/personal space all that much.
The line "in my breadbox of friends, you are a crumb" is so funny. I also like when one of them winds a piece of paper around one of her pencils on which they wrote "famous traitors", with Claudia's name under Benedict Arnold's.
I used to love Ashley's skirt on the cover.

Yeah and along with Benedict Arnold was the Wicked Witch of the West... another obsessive Wizard of Oz moment from Ann Hmm I wonder what it would have been like if the BSC had seen the show, Wicked... There were also other oh-so-mature notes - "Roses are red, violets are blue, traitors are jerks and so are you."And Ashley's "little but noble" fire hydrant ;D

I love this book! I liked how Claud was gonna sculpt Jackie, I thought that was really sweet/cute. Although of course even tho Claud doesn't finish her project, she still gets some stupid award cause she is just soooooo talented. Whatever. I liked how Kristy left a blank note in Claudia's room to "mess with her" heh. So mature.

The blank paper thing made me laugh, but if they wanted it to look like they'd written something mean and then erased it, they should've actually written something. You can generally tell when something's been written on or not. But then, it is Claudia, so who knows.

Oh, true. I thought they were dumb for not writing anything TO erase. But didn't they also want her to think of the possibility that they were going to write something mean but couldn't bring themselves to, and just left it blank? Either way though, it seemed like it would have little effect.
Hahaha, I forgot about that. That's awesome. I love how serious Ashley is...

I liked Ashley's seriousness and dedication to art. It's not to common to find a 13 year old like that, at least from what I have seen.

This book always used to inspire me to get artistic...but I'm not good at drawing or painting or anything like that, so it never lasted long.

Was just thinking about how I never read this book until I got older because on the cover, it looks like Ashley has a cane and an old fashioned dress on so I assumed that the plot was that Claud befriended some disabled girl who reminded me of Clara from the movie "Heidi". ;D Obviously, this is so far from what it actually is but the cover just made me think that. Anyone else think Ashley looks like she has a cane or do I just have a vivid imagination? This initial perception of Ashley as disabled has stuck with me, too, and now I always think of her that way.

^^ Ha, now that you mention it, it does kind of look like the railing on the stoop is a cane. Good old Hodges. :-p

It bugged me how in this book Ashley's whole life was her art. It seems kind of unhealthy to me to be fixated on one thing so much.
