I always thought Mary Anne and the Bad Luck Mystery was one of the books that wouldn't be worth reading again, but I read it this morning and there are so many good moments in it (many of them snark worthy!). The sitting job at the Pikes when Byron burned the Daddy Stew (a casserole with sausage pieces which Claudia thought seemed "revolting") and the bird that flew into the house and Claire wondered if the bird knew Santa Claus as it came down the chimney Also that emergency meeting they held when they were trying to find a charm to ward off the bad luck and evil forces, Mary Anne had her witty moments when asking Claudia if the spell books they hired had been floating around the room at night and Kristy went mental - "MARY ANNE!" A tad hypocritical when Kristy said that Mary Anne better get them out of the mess she'd got them into, as it was them who told her to throw the chain letter out For a "mature" 11 year old, Mallory can be a bit of a ninny as she said that everytime she goes past a graveyard, her and all the Pike kids hold their breath so they won't be possessed and what would she do in the graveyard, she can't hold her breath that long ;D

^ That was actually one of the baby-sitting jobs worth reading about.

I absolutely love that scene! This book is pretty funny, I agree that it's one you forget is worth reading again.

^ A lot of the earlier books have some really not-so-obviously funny parts -- I laughed at the puns in the newspaper article titles the girls notice in the paper that first mentions the Phantom Caller in Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls. I remember they were like, "Angry Pig Goes Hog Wild" and "Depressed Trucker Drives Self Crazy". I also was extremely amused by Sam calling during a meeting in, I think, Kristy's Big Day as Marmee March and asking for a sitter for Amy who had experience with little women.

I had forgotten about the Pike sitting experience in this one. I loved that part! The chimney thing is so funny and I can't hear the words "daddy stew" without laughing. I even dream about daddy stew. I also laughed at Sam and at the mystery itself. The girls were so gullible and freaked out over nothing - classic!

I'm embarrassed to admit that after I read this book as a kid I started holding my breath everytime we drove past a cemetary.

As much as I love all the moments already mentioned, I think my favourite part in this book is the final showdown. That was so awesome!

I so wanted to go to a cemetery in the dark with a bunch of friends after reading this. I even wished I could get revenge on someone by playing a prank there.

I agree this book was funny I felt really bad for Mary Anne though, the way the other girls were picking on her like it was all her fault. And the necklace! Haha!

I thought it was funny where someone mentions a black cat crossing their path- in the British version a note was included that explained that this is considered bad luck in america. It kind of dampened the atmosphere a bit!

Also remember at the dance (when Mary Anne actually danced, unlike in later books where she says she never dances, disappointing Logan in the process), Logan and Mary Anne dress as cats and Claudia's date looks more like her father than her date according to Mary Anne ;D

I did remember about MA dancing and it always bugged me how other books made a big deal about her refusing to dance. Were those books later or earlier, though? Don't remember Logan being disappointed. Maybe this is why she won't dance again???
