I like the Dawn-in-California books for some reason (well, except the Whitney one ) This one was very... un-BSC in Dawn's daring stunt. I don't think many 13 yr olds would have the nerve to steal their dad's credit card number, book a flight and take off that very same day for the opposite side of the country in order to "stick it" to their dad's future wife. Despite my annoyance with Dawn's character - completely butchered by the ghostwriters - I've gotta respect her nerve in this one. Also loved Kristy's insane jealousy of the We Heart Kids Club's publicity. The Thomas Talent Agency? ;D ... funny that the ongoing "germ" of tension between Kristy/Dawn was actually acknowledged in a book! Any other thoughts on this one?

I'm going to be predictable and say that my favourite part was the one bag of nuts that Dawn bought at the airport. Why do I have this stupid fixation on food?! I liked when Dawn got yelled at by her parents The subplot in this one was good too - Kristy's jealousy, that you mentioned. I thought ti was hilarious how she sent the tape without rewinding it.

'The Great Escape' was the highlight of this one. It was amusing to see an oh-so-responsible sitter in the doghouse for once. I also love how every 'club' member is a blonde, surfing health food-junkie. (But of course, according to Dawn and the Surfer Ghost, none of them is a 'sterotypical Californian'.)

Oh the whole blonde thing was so annoying! Are there really a lot of blondes in California? Natural blonde hair seems pretty unusual, it's weird that all four We Heart Kids Club members are blonde.
I can't work out who's who on the cover, either. Well, the one holding the radio must be Maggie, considering she has that green tail thing in her hair. I assume the one talking on the phone is Jill (she looks pretty dorky, which Jill was definitely supposed to be in the CD series) and the other one is Sunny. But I could be wrong.

None of them look slutty enough to be Sunny.

^ I've just finished Stacey and the Boyfriend Trap and she makes Sunny look practically angelic.

This book made me force my father to buy me a tiny jar of cashew butter that cost $8.99. I ate it on crackers, like Jill, and finished it in about four hours. My dad refused to buy me more, not realizing that he'd actually lucked out -- if my parents had been divorced, I TOTALLY would have stolen his credit card to pay for a flight/train/cab/rickshaw to wherever my mom was, which probably would have cost more than the cashew butter.

I've never seen cashew butter anywhere! And on a slightly similar note, I wonder what sort of nuts Dawn bought at the airport.

Just read this, the only person on the cover I could place was Maggie and I think Dawn. This book was okay, I like reading about Dawn in CA and I agree with macca, the whole flying across country/stealing Dad's cc was pretty risky for a 13 year old. I just don't understand why we still have to read about Stoneybook sitting jobs in a Dawn in CA book.

I always liked this one a lot. I have no idea why. I know we're supposed to give good reasons why we like/dislike particular books on this board, but in this case, I honestly can't. For some odd reason, I can read it again and again.

I feel the same way. There's just something about it that has made me read it a lot. Maybe it's just the fact that I had multiple copies for some reason.

I really liked this book. I was surprised I did. It's one that I know I will read again and again.
I did notice that Dawn said something about there not being a vegetarian meal on her first flight so she had to "share" her trip with a "chicken carcass." Before that she mentions that Jeff was getting stuff out of the freezer for dinner including fish sticks. So, fish don't have carcasses?
This book had a sitter dealing with an important personal situation and other than to plane trip, I don't think any of it was too overly dramatic. Dawn's reaction to her fathers engagement was typical I thought. I give her credit for trying to grin and bear it. She did consider her father's happiness. And she called herself a spoiled brat! I also loved that the Dawn-Kristy tension was acknowledged. I can totally see how Carol and Jack would have problems, Carol with trying to hard to be a teenager (I hate it when adults act like that) expecting to go out alot. Jack was older had been there and done that and had responsibilities so he couldn't accomodate. It was nice to see Jack stand up to her. I expected him to just do whatever Carol wanted, since she's, you know, the newer younger model he traded in his wife for. (I am convinced that Jack cheated on Sharon).
I loved Dawn's guts in this one, although were it me, I wouldn't have gone to Stoneybrook. I would've gone somewhere I didn't know anybody and just run away. Kind of baited and teased my family and played a game of cat and mouse with them. Well, if I had Dawn's parents anyway. I wouldn't be brave enough to pull that on my parents! I don't know what Dawn expected her mother to do when she got to CT. I did get tired of hearing about her bicoastal life.
Loved Kristy's jealousy. The others made very good points about the club being busy enough. And I hate to say it, but I think I would preferr the BSC's rules to the laid back WKC. I could do without the rigidness of the rules though.

Read this for the first time! I thought it was quite good. If I had read it when I was younger I would have thought Dawn was awesome for booking the flight and calling the cab and everything. I never would have been so brave/take-charge at thirteen. I remember Jeff cracking a bunch of jokes in Dawn and Too Many Sitters, and they were actually kinda funny. His jokes here are just bad Dawn has a laugh like pealing bells, ha ha! I liked the story Stephie wrote about the flower, aww. I think this is the first actual description of Carol's appearance I've read; I never pictured her as a redhead. Blonde or brunette (my image of her changed from book to book), but never red. I liked the food mentions...Thai food, strawberry shortcake...mmm.
