Ugh.
A surprisingly enjoyable read for such a poorly written book - or maybe I'm judging unfairly. It's just that the last book featuring Ashley Wyeth was Claudia and the New Girl (I know she was briefly mentioned in others, but this is only her second prominent feature IIRC) which was actually written by Ann who really brought Ashley's weird artsy character to life. This Peter Lerangis effort just can't measure up. Compare this one to #12 and it just fails miserably.
The Ashley of WSTO seems like a mere charicature (sp?) ... which is strange, because Peter Lerangis was usually one of the better ghostwriters. At least, he did a fantastic job with the Cali Diaries.
Nevertheless, it was entertaining (and you can't ask for much more from a BSC book, I guess). I especially liked Kristy's desperation to win a spot on the radio show and her frustration with it all.
Oh, and this book features yet another example of the BSC winning streak.

I thought her essay was pretty good, but judging from other works of writing she has done in the past it seems as if her spell check program is a lot better than the one I have. Anyways, I thought that Ashley didn't seem like the Ashley from book 12 also. Yeah, I agree that Ann writes better than her ghostwriters. And just like with Claudia's personals, I always wondered how Claudia's opinions could be so effective towards people. Her advice to a woman led her to donate like 1000 dollars to the radio show. And don't even get me started on Claudia's personals.

I thought the point of bringing Ashley in for this book was to show that her life wasn't all about art and she had other interests...so that's why she wasn't "weird and artsy". I think the only mention of it was when Claudia wonders to herself if she wanted the job to sketch microphones or something. I've always really liked this book! Thought it was hilarious how Kristy wouldn't give up on her lame play ideas. And how Claudia got dressed up in a tuxedo that one time to do a show.

I thought it was hilarious how after she auditioned her first awful play she said, "so when should we come by for the real thing?" as if she was a shoe-in.

^ hahaha yeah, that was great. Just like Jessi's confidence at obtaining the Peter Pan lead.

I liked Ashley better in this book better than in "Claudia and the New Girl"... All the BSC characters change from the first books to the end of the series (maturing, maybe?), so I guess it's only fair that minor characters are allowed growing room as well.

Ashley as a person WAS nicer in this book than in Claudia and the New Girl, but she seemed to have lost her intense, serious, obsessive artsy ways and therefore, her character. But I guess your theory about 'growing room' makes sense. I suppose Claudia and the New Girl has sentimental value for me, I absolutely LOVED it as a kid, so I was disappointed that Ashley didn't seem like the same person.

Yeah I agree, she should have showed signs of her former obsession for art. It would have to have been sort of subtle and believable. I guess that would have been too hard for a ghostwriter to do.

I actually just finished rereading this book, and I have to say, I love it. There are some many warm-and-fuzzy feelings that I get from this book.

The engineers giving them flowers on their last show, the note that Ashley leaves on the chocolate bar at the end, the friendship theme of the first show, the call from the mum, the fax from the mum and Bob's reaction... Aww.

I like how Kristy asks Charlie to drive Claudia to the radio station. He might as well have lived in the Junk Bucket -- all he ever did was chauffeur the BSC around and occasionally neck with girlfriends.
