I'm only halfway through this one, but I can see where it's going and already I've got some comments. - Since when has Vanessa Pike had reddish brown hair like Mallory's? Also, is it realistic for nine yr old best friends to be so outraged that they had the same bathing suits? My nine yr old best friend and I would've been absolutely delighted at the prospect. In fact, we'd probably have done it deliberately. But then, my childhood BFF and I were creepily obsessed ;D - How would Stacey have got away with her scheme if Claudia didn't know about Robert? As it was, Stacey relied on the whole "I'm gonna go hang out at the pizza place/beach/store etc with Claud" to avoid suspicion from her dad, so what would she have done if they hadn't run in to Robert on the first day? I don't see how she could've kept Robert a secret from Claudia and still spent time with him. - Stacey didn't treat Claud particularly well, but I don't think she's being too horrendous. After all, she only spends what? A couple of hours with Robert after he finishes work? She would've spent the entire day with Claudia and ordinarily Claud would've found a little summer romance for company -Speaking of which, I think this is about the fifth summer of the BSC eighth grade. Looking forward to finishing this one!! It's pretty good. ;D

I liked the bit where Robert almost breaks up with Stacey It's terrible of me, but I liked seeing her suffer for that little bit. I thought she was acting hypocritical to her dad, even though her dad probably should have told the truth from the beginning as well. I got the impression that she spent a lot of nights with Robert, so I wonder what Claudia would've done... I'd have been annoyed too, if I were Claudia. On an island with a population of about 5 people, and all by myself with nothing to do every night? Hardly a fun holiady.

Much as I liked seeing Stace getting the mini-smackdown, Robert's telling-off really bugged me. He knew from day one that Stacey was spinning sh*t to her father and he suggested she cancel her plans with Claudia for the sunset sail. I think they added the Robert abandonment to highlight the point about lies being terrible and creating nothing but trouble, but I don't think it was entirely realistic, considering Robert was well aware that Stacey was lying and didn't have a problem with it until the end.
Claudia spent the nights reading, hanging out at the pizza place and planning the Fourth of July parade while Stacey was on her dates, I think. But you're right, it hardly sounds like an exciting time.

That's true, actually... Robert seemed to be in on the whole lie thing from the beginning. He *did* say that it hadn't really hit him that Stace wasn't perfect until Claud left, and he began to have second thoughts. So yeah, he isn't in the all-good party, either. But I still liked the smackdown

Well of course, it's always nice to see the "sophisticated and New York Chic" Stacey get taken down a peg or two! ;D

Speaking of sophisticated NY Stacey, what are pants that are "long and full" supposed to look like? I can't picture what the outfit that she bought for the dinner with her dad (at the beginning of the book) would look like. And! The cover illustration! Robert and his boat shoes! Heh. I work in a shoe shop, and only old men buy those shoes... not 13 year old boys.

I just reread this one yesterday, and I'd always liked it in the past, but this time around, I was struck with what a brat Stacey was. She actually couldn't understand WHY people were mad at her? She didn't think anything that had happened was her fault? Even at the end, when she apologixed, she never really seemed to GET IT. I don't blame Claudia for feeling the way she did (I go the impression that Stacey was just killing time with her until she could meet the boat, too). I did think, however, that Mr. McGill was unfair for being angry. He was covering for himself just as much as she was.

I would've been pissed if I was Claudia, too. Stacey blatantly lied to her and acted all excited to spend the vacation with her, when really she was going FOR ROBERT. Even her sneaking off for a couple hours each night is too much, imo. What was Claudia supposed to do during that time? And I thought Robert breaking up with her was stupid, he knew the whole time she'd been lying!
The Vanessa/Haley thing makes me laugh. I do have to kinda side with Vanessa, though, Haley pretty much did copy her!

I always pictured that outfit like a one-piece outfit--that crappy jumpsuit trend that was in three years ago with people like JLo wearing them. Kind of like a rayon-esque jump suit with wide pants or gaucho-like pants (but longer of course) and cap sleeves. I remember in junior high how cool sunflowers were--whether on baby tees, tank tops or scrunchies. ***shudders***
What gets me most is how Stacey passes up on two weeks to vacation almost anywhere she wants to to be with her junior high boyfriend. I know he has his reasons to accept Stacey's choice--but still. Couldn't one of them pulled rank and chosen, I don't know, Spain? Hawaii? somewhere in the Caribbean? Italy?
I liked the chapter where Stacey and Claudia go out and Stacey keeps trying to hurry their night out. She tells Claudia not to worry about looking all nice since she doesn't know anyone. She tells Claudia that they're gonna hit the dinner rush at 5 pm or so. She tells Claudia she has to eat NOW because of her diabetes and Claudia starts to make something for her right there in the kitchen. Stacey demands to know why Claudia's meal is going to take so long to prepare.
Nice Stacey.

Oh, yeah! Stacey was totally rude that night. And then she expected people to feel sorry for her... I loved when Kristy said in her usual blunt way, "Well, it *is* kind of your fault, isn't it?". Heh.

stacey's dad should have smelled a rat when he was like, "Let's go to Paris!" and she was like, "Nah, I prefer FIRE ISLAND."

Yeah, that Stacey was a real piece of work sometimes.
But ITA, particularly regarding Stacey's vacation choice. Wouldn't someone have questioned why she wanted to go there, as opposed to, oh, I dunno... anywhere else in the world?!?!
