Not altogether unlikely. A lot of kids get diagnosed with needing glasses around the time they start going to school all day, and Karen's only six in this one, and skipped half of Kindergarten or first grade depending on which book you read, so this might be the first time she's had to focus on anything for so long. Also, very little kids don't know that other people see things differently than they do, so Karen may have just assumed in a little kid way that all people saw things as kind of fuzzy. The two pairs of glasses always seemed a bit contrived to me though. Also, I love her list of mean things to do to Ricky in this book.
7. Tell him his eyes have turned orange. Then have Nancy tell him his eyes have turned orange. Then have Hannie and maybe Natalie tell him his eyes have turned orange. Laugh at him if he checks them in a mirror.
That is an awesome revenge tactic, when you're six.

^ Agree about the eye thing not coming out of nowhere. I never got the impression that it did, anyway. I thought she said she'd been having headaches for a while and they just kept getting worse. I know neither of my cousins got their glasses or had problems until they were even older than Karen - like 8 or so. I really like this book as it reminds me of what my mom went through with having to wear glasses as a kid. I thankfully have never had to wear glasses but really feel for Karen and like the way she ends up handling the school picture. Also enjoyed the irony of Ricky having to get glasses. ;D

I remember being kind of surprised that glasses would seem like such a big thing to be teased about--when I got my glasses, everyone else wanted to try them on! It seems to me that they aren't always such an easy target nowadays, just because they're more commonly worn.
I was sort of annoyed by the two pairs thing, because I already wore bifocals at that age and I didn't understand why she couldn't just do that. Also, from there on out, it annoyed me exceedingly when a cover illustration had her wearing her blue glasses when in context, she very obviously was not reading or doing any kind of close work.
I do remember really liking the cover on this one, though, and guessing who all the kids were.

I got mine at the beginning of 2nd grade and no one gave me a hard time. I'd forgotten about people asking to try them on.

Karen makes a list of mean things to do to Ricky in this book...is this the one where she wants to tell him he's adopted?

Several of my friends and my mom were teased unmercifully being called "four eyes" and every other insult that Ricky used on Karen. Different schools, maybe....

I liked this book a lot and liked the cover as well for the same reason. I knew how Karen was feeling, because I had a lot of the same problems right before I got my glasses.

Lol, that was the best part of the whole book and when she also wants to tell Ricky that he's adopted ;D. Loved the irony at the end when Ricky got glasses himself, served him right for picking on Karen. I never understood why she needed two pairs of glasses- one for reading and one for the rest of the time. One pair should've been strong enough for everyday use and reading right?

Part of me wonders if she faked needing glasses, because that's what I did. Yup. I pretended I couldn't read the eye chart as well as I could because I wanted them for some reason. And I got them, and wore them for a week and then just stopped. And now I'm very nearsighted as an adult. Karma? Or maybe I just messed up my eyes by wearing glasses I didn't need? Or both? I did the same thing with tubes in my ears. I was quite the hypochondriac. I wouldn't put it past Karen, but then this is one of the LS books I don't remember reading, so if she was teased really badly she probably would have thought it wasn't worth it. I don't remember anyone ever being teased for wearing glasses though, or braces, or anything. I have one eye that wonders off a little when I get tired (I actually did have a couple of surgeries to correct that as a kid) and I was teased horribly for that (to this day I get furious when I hear anyone use the term "cross eyed").

^ I don't think Karen faked needing glasses. She really didn't want them and was really upset that she needed them at first and felt self conscious about them, from what I remember. She actually tried to act like she didn't have anything wrong but it was obvious to her mom and Watson that something was going on.

One pair should've been strong enough for everyday use and reading right? nope, they're different afflictions. needing glasses for reading is being farsighted, and needing glasses for far away things is being nearsighted. you would need two different pairs of glasses to accomplish both, or, as alula said, a pair of bifocals with part of the glasses for reading and another part for far away stuff. i myself can't really read with my contacts but am pretty much blind without them. such is life.
