Sometimes I think Karen is really a very shy little girl who sits in her bedroom imagining stories about herself. Why else would everyone always be obsessed with her? In this one Audrey really wants a twin and latches on to Karen. I admit I went through a wanting a twin phase when I was little but I never pretended even with my best friend.
I didn't get Karen's two family trees thing, except that of course she had to have two of something. Ms. Coleman wanted a genetic family tree made, so Karen's divorced parents shouldn't have affected the making of it at all. Elizabeth and Seth would just be little lines off of Watson and Lisa. Unless every other student at Stoneybrook Academy was inbred, they would all have two sides of their trees.

when my sister had to make a family tree, she put her goddparents on it instead of my dad's brothers because my dad doesn't get along with them. so i think a family tree in these modern times can be pretty flexible.

^ Agree. That's great Greer. ;D These confusions are one reason I hate it when teachers make kids do family trees in school. I always wonder about kids who don't know one of their parents. Imagine leaving "dad's" side blank.... I have a few friends who would have to.

^yeah -- there are all kinds of families. I think maybe instead of ancestral trees, you should be allowed to merely emphasize the people in your life who are important to you. i remember being really upset when i presented my family tree in first grade and i said that my family was from belarus and my teacher was like, "that's not a real country, you're russian." it made me feel really bad. It's like hey woman you teach first grade, you're not an expert on slavic ethnic groups and politics.

Good point, that makes tons of sense . I loved this book, one of my favorites. I thought it was cute that Audrey wanted to be Karen's twin (even though it didn't work out) and it was nice to see Audrey have a role in this book instead of being just "one of Karen's classmates" that are just in the background while Karen is the star of the show.

I thought it was cute how Karen hid Emily in the attic because she was scared of her being taken away. I also liked how Audrey wanted to be Karen's twin. Poor girl when they had twin's day, couldn't the people have humored them a little? GEESH!

I was surprised that up until this point Emily wasn't "officially" adopted yet. It makes the BSC book where Emily arrives seem less stupid. Watson and Elizabeth didn't just pick Emily up from a shelf at Adoptions 'R Us like it seemed. Adopting her took some effort.

^ Agree. I had never thought about this before but you're right. I wonder if there was a waiting period. I know there usually is with US adoptions, anyway. Love "Adoptions are Us." ;D Kind of gives a whole new view of "Babies R Us." ;D

Kind of gives a whole new view of "Babies R Us." ;D Lol I used to think that Babies R Us sold babies like Toys R Us sold toys ;D. I think I even asked my mom if we could get a baby there when we drove past it one time back when I was like 5 or 6 lol ;D.

^hehe that's so cute!
maybe ann received criticism because she didn't research adoption for kristy and mother's day surprise and decided to slyly remedy it in an ls book?

I need to re read this book, I haven't read it in a long time and everything you are saying about it sounds really interesting.
Question is this the LS book where Karen mentions something about red tape and not seeing it? Or am I imagining that and thinking of another book?

^Yes, I believe it was this book. You are not imagining it! I thought it was cute that Karen thought of looking around for the red tape.

I guess people didn't catch on to what they were doing, though??? (People can be dense sometimes. ;D) I loved the thing about hiding Emily in the attic and the "red tape." So cute. ;D
