I'm in 2 minds about this book, I liked it because we saw a bit of Kishi history (the hatts) and I love new characters.
If you were t ask me about the mystery and the culprit- I wouldn't be able to tell you. I think as a mystery it was pretty much pants.
Laura Hatt- I didn't like her. She gave off a 'Eternal Wannabe' vibe- You know, the type of girls (who also step on people)who strive to be popular by devoting their entire time to extra curricular activities but still the popular kids don't get their name right.
I'm suprised Claudia didn't thump her hard in the throat. Say what you want about the Cl but at the end of the day she's your host. And she's given up half her room so you can have somewhere to sleep. You shouldn't be telling strangers about what the Mr and Mrs Kishis allow their daughter to do.
I thought Janine was a b*tch to both Jerry and Claudia. It's good that we saw another side of her though.
It was pretty funny when Claudia spends a good paragraph saying how pretty and cool she is and that how Steve would never chose Janine while she was around and then...... ;D
I do remember thinking it was unfair that Janine got Steve because she had Jerry and Claudia had no-one.
It's good that Janine becomes the babe of the sisters for a change.
Why couldn't anyone sleep in the Den? - Or spare room?

I liked this one also. The mystery was kind of a bleh because the culprit in the end had only just been mentioned in the end, so I wasn't able to figure it beforehand. Not that I'm able to for the other mysteries either.
I hated the part where Laura was all like, "um, can I have tuna salad instead," or something like that. Man, she seems spoiled. And what's with Ann liking to make siblings seem totally opposite with each other?

I liked this one, too. Quite a lot of the mysteries I've only read once when they were first published, so I barely remember them at all and I don't want to read any of the threads about them 'cause it'll spoil the plot for me upon rereads. I just read this one about a year ago, so I remember it.

Read this for the first time yesterday. Didn't like it very much, which was sad, because going into it it seemed like it would have potential. Just did not feel well executed at all. Janine also didn't seem like Janine. Her intellectual-speak was hardly there and she's almost like Laura throughout the whole book, tactless and unfriendly. Hated Laura, Caryn was ok, Steve was just weird. I'm not really sure if Janine "got" him, they were just in the same school and all, he got popular very quickly, that rubbed off a bit on her, and she started to feel a little mighty about their "relationship".
I liked the chapter where they have to go to the Kishi's bathroom to hold a meeting. Mal and Jessi still sit on the floor as they would in Claudia's room!

Yeah, Bathroom-sitters Club! That was pretty good.

Just reread and I always think I like this one more than I really do. It isn’t bad and does seem like more of a real “mystery” than a lot of the others. Sometimes, I am in the mood for this. And it does still freak me out – I reread while at Disney World and got a bit scared on the Haunted Mansion the next day ;D I can’t stand Laura Hatt (and don’t really care for the rest of the family except maybe Mr. Hatt). One thing I don’t really get about this book is why Claudia suspects Jerry. I know he is fighting with Janine but still am not sure why she thinks he would make the threats. Does he really seem to have that much of a dark side that he’d be so jealous of Steve Hatt? Then again, he is a huge jerk in European Vacation so maybe. Also, I have to remember this is Claudia – the queen of far-reaching assumptions.

Just quickly reread (it was a "dark, stormy night" ;D) and still love this one for its creepiness. Some thoughts I had this time, though, were how dumb the girls were to go home with Paul Langley (even though this is something I can see some of the girls I hung out with as teenagers doing so it is definitely plausible). Also, were the Hatts ever mentioned again? I can't stand the throwaway mystery characters and wish they would at least mention them again. I don't care for the comet subplot at all. Not sure why but I just can't get interested in it. I find it strange that this book takes place right before Christmas as it always seems like a summer book to me. That's why I just overlook the Christmas references and pretend it takes place in early Sept. or June or sometime like that ;D

I thought the subplot was so ridiculous it was funny in this one.
(Not exact quote) Dawn: Buddy was so excited for the comet next week. Kristy: I know, let's throw a comet party!! All other sitters: Great idea!
They didn't even try to give a reason for the party in this one. I guess the ghostwriters were tired of making up excuses for festivals and carnivals.

Haha bathroom sitters club. Kristy on the toilet, ma and claud in the tub, dawn and stacey alternating between sitting casually on the counter and in the tub, and mal and jessi on the floor.

^ That part was pretty funny. ;D I can't imagine how it must have been, though, to feel so cramped in your own house and desperate for a place that you had to cram into the bathroom. The poor BSC. Too bad they didn't have call forwarding so they could meet somewhere else.

I thought the bathroom sitters club part was hillarious. Overall I actually liked this mystery. Janine seemed weird in this one to me though too, she just didn't strike me as being Janine in this one. Steve also creeped me out a bit, just something about him rubbed me the wrong way.

^ Agree about Janine being weird or un-Janine-like. Maybe it was her crush on Steve Hatt. Also agree about Jerry being creepy. I never thought he was the one causing the problems at the lighthouse or sending the notes but always got some kind of deranged stalker vibe from him. This book and European Vacation make me really dislike him and make me a bit frightened of him. Glad Janine got rid of him ;D

i liked the portrayal of janine here because it added another dimension to her. she's not only a genius, she has feelings too.

I never really thought about Janine's portrayal as another dimension but that is a good point. It just was weird because I never really saw that in her.

I was just thinking about this book when I looked at my Dept. 56 Halloween lighthouse. Every time I see a lighthouse now, I get kind of creeped out thinking of this book. Does anyone else do this with the BSC plots, settings, etc?
