There wasn't a thread for this one.
Despite the extreme unrealisticness of the plot, I actually kind of liked this book. I liked seeing more about Abby's extended family even though IIRC the reason for the sisters not speaking for so long was pretty dumb. It seemed to be more about the family than the "mystery." This was one of the first Abby books I ever read and she seemed a lot less annoying here than in some of the regular series books.

Was this the one where Abby sneaks off to New York or am I imagining that?

I've been going to start a thread on this one with these exact thoughts! I actually liked it pretty well - probably because I always love reading about babies and used to fantasize about a baby being left on my doorstep. As for the mystery part, it was only a mystery to the BSC. That was kind of funny. I did think it was strange how Abby's mom didn't tell her and Anna who the baby belonged to and let it remain so mysterious. Mrs. Stevenson actually seemed a little softer hearted in this one and I enjoyed reading the stuff about the family. Also liked all of the kids poems and how they were infatuated with Daniel. It was especially cute to see the little boys so taken with a baby. Yes, this is the one where Abby goes to NY to see who her mom is visiting in the hospital there. This does make me think of one annoying thing about the book (and all the Abby books) - the seeming lack of communication in the Stevenson family.

She does. To see her where her mom went or something like that. I haven t read it in a while....I liked this Abby book the best. She wasn't as annoying as she is on other books, and I liked reading about her mothers side of the family.

I liked this one! I actually like all the Abby mysteries, and I like most of Abby's regular books as well. I like how she actually has a distinctive voice, unlike most of the other characters. I even like how the mystery was solved in this one, and how it seemed to have a bit more depth than some of the other mysteries.

aln1982, that's cute that you used to fantasize about a baby being left on your doorstep! Can't say I ever did that, but I do like it as a plot device--didn't Annie start that way?

I just read this one for the first time. I remember seeing it on the shelves when it first came out and wanting it, but thinking I was too old for the BSC, I didn't buy it.
It was pretty good. Farfetched, as most BSC mysteries are, but it's still a good read. Eli/Daniel sounded so cute. One thing I didn't get, though - if Mrs. Stevenson knew it was her sister's baby, wouldn't she have been able to find out his actual name? Though I guess if she suddenly declared a name change, Abby and Anna would have wanted to know why...

^ Agree the questions it would obviously raise was probably the reason that Mrs. Stevenson didn't use the baby's right name. She was just weird in this one, not telling Abby and Anna who the baby really was. That always mades me disappointed when I reached the end because it was like "there was no mystery! She knew all along and we had no idea."

Well, it's still not the lamest mystery solution ever. That would be Jessi and the Jewel Thieves

IMHO this was the stupiest plot. (j and the J Thieves was lame but not just plain stupid). Mrs. Stevenson couldn't just freakin' tell the girls? I would've been furious if she had been my mother. Furious and confused as to why she made such an unnecessary decision.

^ Agree about it being so stupid that Mrs. Stevenson didn't tell the girls. That did seem really unnecessary and I don't understand why she didn't just tell the truth. I also would have been furious. I think that's why I liked it how Abby went to NY to investigate. ;D I did like the whole idea of finding a baby on the doorstep and Daniel sounded adorable. Just wish there would have been a real mystery involved rather than just a lack of communication between mother and daughters.

If I don’t consider this one a “mystery” (because it’s really more of a communication problem), I really like it. Just the whole idea of a baby on the doorstep fascinates me (though I probably wouldn’t like it in real life and would rather fantasize about it ;D) I really enjoyed reading about baby Daniel/Eli and it made me really want to hold a baby. I thought it was adorable how the little kids – even Emily – were so enthralled with him and wrote their poems about him, even the boys. ;D If I wouldn’t have known the ending of this one, I might have suspected that Erin was involved. I think they did a good job making her a red herring. I started to blame Abby for not just asking her mom outright what was going on but saw as I kept reading that she basically did and her mom just kept evading the subject. The whole family does not seem to be so good with communication….

^Yeah, like how mrs. stevenson basically knew what was going on the whole time and just didn't want to tell her daughters.

^ Yeah. That whole thing is just so weird. It's like she almost went out of her way to not tell the girls. Sometimes I wonder about her....

About half way through the book, I could have sworn I'd read the book before years ago, and that in the end it really was Erin's nephew somehow, but I must have been imagining things because, well it didnt happen like that. After reading this book I now want a baby to appear on my doorstep! Ms Stevenson's excuse about not telling the girls so they didnt have to lie to their grandparents sounded weak, but also somewhat plausible in theory. But I still think she should have told Abby and Anna sooner.
