I'd be miserable if I was Stacey and had to watch my best friend gorge herself with hershey's kisses and gummy bears while I was eating wheat thins (well, actually they are pretty good, but junk food is delicious). Man.
I felt bad for Stacey in Stacey and the Mystery Money when Claudia is literally dangling a bag of M&Ms around, into her mouth and goes "Mmmmm... there's nothing like chocolate!" Poor Stacey...

There actually wasn't anything that bothered me that much about the girls. I think the most annoying things I found were when Stacey thought she was "too cool", Claudia didn't try in school, MA wouldn't speak up for herself, Dawn went on crusades (Saves the Planet and School Spirit War being among my least favorite books) and Abby went overboard with the humor. Now I see all of these things, though, as making the girls more realistic as "people" with faults and different personality characteristics. Somehow, noticing these faults and accepting them (or trying to ;D) in the BSC is helping me realize my own shortcomings that I need to work on and (hopefully ;D) helping me become more tolerant and open minded. That's what I'm going for at least. ;D When I was a kid, I also felt disappointed in Kristy that she started liking Bart but just because I started liking a boy around that time, too, and didn't want to but just couldn't help it. ;D I wanted one BSC member to have the attitude that Abby has in Un-Valentine.

I didn't find Mal and Jessi to be really much more mature than the other girls, quite the opposite actually, I found them to be too intimidated and scared to actually speak up most the time. That bugged me so much, even if it was realistic. I wanted those two to get involved in the fights sometimes rather than just sitting there all "uh...idk!"

Mary Anne's timidness always got to me, I guess because I'm the complete opposite and have a tendency to just bulldoze over people which is something I'm always having to work on.

-how they kind of had no lives outside hanging out with kids. seriously, all the "parties" they through, like going away/birthday parties, the guest list is always like "all the pikes, buddy barrett, charlotte johansson, and a whole bunch of our other charges"!
-this isn't so much annoying about the girls themselves, but maybe the writing. it's hard to explain so i'll give an example. remember when dawn was concerned over helping norman hill with his weight problems and asked all the BSC members for advice? it went something like this: kristy suggested sports, mallory suggested writing and illustrating a book about a fat kid with superpowers, jessi suggested dance exercises, etc etc. how predictable. it's as if they always have to react with the ONE trait/hobby that defines them. if that makes sense.

^ i agree with the things you said, morbidda. like in goodbye stacey goodbye where they have that party with all the charges. i'd be so pissed if the bsc planned that party for me! i'd want one with friends my age.

It seems a little creepy to me how they always do things with the kids. I'm sure that wasn't the intent of the writers though.

I agree. I didn't like how they had to invite kids to parties that didn't necessarily require those kids to be there. But I just thought that they just thought that everybody else wanted the kids to be there, and they didn't want to rock the boat by suggesting otherwise.

Oh God I know! It was like that in Claudia and Crazy Peaches when each member suggested something to help Peaches with her pregnancy.
Kristy on keeping Peaches fit and healthy by organising each of the BSC to go for walks with her (wtf? If I had a niece whose friends were organsing to take me for walks I'd be very disturbed). Mallory creates a mother's journal for Peaches. Jessi gives classical music tapes for the baby to listen to in the womb so it will deveop a taste for dance. Shannon gives French textbooks and tapes so the baby will be bilingual.

^ Wasn't that part of the "chapter 2" in Crazy Peaches? Maybe that's why it was included but agree about always having to emphasize the "special" traits.

Thats because they became charicatures (sp?) by the end of the series and their "special" traits were their defining points.

- In a typical chapter 2 description of the girls, Mallory says she thinks Claudia is scared to try harder in school because she'd find out she still wouldn't be as good as Janine. Not quite sure why, but that always bothered me. Boo, Mal!
- I was always really annoyed with Mrs. Kishi -- she's a librarian! Why is she against Claudia reading Nancy Drew? Shouldn't she be happy her non-academic daughter is reading?? Leave Nancy Alone!

^ I totally agree about Mrs. Kishi and Nancy but think that Mallory was right about Claudia. I think a lot of her not trying had to do with seeing school as "Janine's thing" and trying to go as far as she could in being different so that she didn't have to compete because she might not be able to.
