Mallory brags about her knowledge of babies and toddlers anyway! She was *born* a super sitter, and that's how Mr and Mrs Pike managed to have so many!

Maybe they had sex when they were asleep and weren't aware of it?? She just kept getting pregnant and didn't know why, because they never planned it or anything. But she didn't have the heart to get abortions.

Abortion?!? Not in BSC Land! Mallory and the Missing Baby. haha. That's horrible. Mrs. Pike definitely should have told Mr. Pike "no glove, no love".
I have never understood why Ann M. Martin didn't space those crazy Pike kids out a little more. Maybe make the triplets 9, Vanessa 7, Nicky 5, Margo 4, and Claire 2. But honestly, 11, 10 (times 3!), 9, 8, 7, and 5 would NEVER happen!
The Pikes wouldn't be such a crazy, interesting family anymore, full of interesting individuals. Babies cannot show off their personalities and the Pikes all have interesting different ones. Byron - sensitive, Nicky - wants to play with bros., Vanessa - poet, etc.

^ Well then Mallory should've been 13 (it was totally unrealistic having 11 yr old babysitters anyway). The triplets could've been 11, Vanessa 9, Nicky 7, Margo 5, Claire, 3. Having the kids two years apart is a lot easier to swallow (which is maybe what Mrs Pike should've done! ;D ) than popping out a new one EVERY SINGLE YEAR including straight after triplets!

The Pikes weren't always the best to Mallory, but overall they were kinda fun. When the club did the special Mother's Day event Mr. Pike helped out with rides and watching kids who were too young to go to the carnival. Yeah, they took two sitters with them on vacations, but they found a way to take their kids on two-week yearly vacations. Tons of families with one or two kids don't do that. The Pike kids wound up with life long memories.
Mal's hair. There wasn't much to choose from in terms of hair products back in the late 80s/early 90s. Not that Mal would have been allowed to use some frizz ease or anything. But speaking from experience, if you've got frizzy curly hair then you've got frizzy curly hair. Getting a few inches cut off doesn't do anything except make it puff out more on the sides.
Everyone makes fun of Mallory's glitter obsession. Mrs. Pike was doing Mallory a favor by not letting her buy those clothes. Wash them a few times and they look like ass.

I agree that the Pike parents have many good points. Better than a lot of parents I know. It is having all of the kids that makes them interesting. After all, the books wouldn't have much to them if some of the things weren't a little extreme. That's why i read - to escape "reality".

Yeah, if she got any of the glitter on her face it would look like her freckles glowed in the dark.

True enough, but Mallory made it sound as if her parents thought she was too young for sparkles and that when she was 13 or so, she'd be allowed to wear them. But yeah, the Pike Parents weren't as horrendous as they're made out to be. They're just fun to snark. Bloody breeding machines!

I always thought the Pikes parents were pretty cool. I remember once when Jordan accidentally hit Mrs. Pike with a water balloon and everybody thought Mrs. Pike was going to drag them into the house and nag them to death, but instead she came out with a water gun and squirted them. I dunno. I just think that her parents want her mind on her responsibilities (especially towards her siblings) as much as possible and cut down on as much distractions (glitter, pierced ears, make-up) as they can.

But see, that's what I hate. An eleven yr old does not have a "responsibility" to her siblings beyond the basic family considerations and duties.
It was completely weird and unfair that the Pike Parents had a "liberal" attitude toward raising kids - allow them to run around the house naked, eat popsicles for breakfast etc, but then put tight restrictions on Mallory's clothing

I think that Mallory was such a helpful child that they didn't want to lose that about her. I guess their way of compensating for giving her more responsibilities over her siblings than normal 11-year olds was paying her to babysit her siblings.

^ yeah, you might be right. Hey, in that respect, my parents could've learned a thing or two. My sister and I watched our much younger sister most nights after school and it never even occured to anyone that we should be paid. Hmmph.
