I guess it's a matter of opinion (letting your cat out), but in my experience cats tend to wander. Where I live even if they just go to the neighbor's yard, if that neighbor happened to hate cats and wanted to waste their time by calling the police then the police could ticket the cat owner (it's like $5? nothing major). But if it happens too many times the police can capture the cat and take it to the animal shelter and then you have to go pick it up. (Just like kitty jail, hee!) Plus even if your cat is fixed and has its shots there's lots of cats out there that don't. Yours won't catch anything, but what if it goes somewhere that Mr. Aggressive Tomcat doesn't like it? Catfight. And there are assholes out there that swerve their cars to try to hit squirrels or cats or whatever. You can't let your dog wander around unleashed and unsupervised, so I don't see how cats are any different. Not trying to be preachy, just my opinion.

Wha? The police have time to drop by every time a cat wanders by? And who calls the police for that?! And running them over on purpose? Sickos.

Yeah, that makes sense... but I guess the difference is, you can let your dog into your backyard to run around (without having to be leashed and supervised) and know that's where they'll stay, but cats - being the gymnasts they are - will head straight for the fence or nearest tree. So the only way to avoid wandering is to keep them permanently inside.
The good thing is, our cats generally prefer being inside anyway and usually only go outside to do their business.
I can't believe people literally call the police over wandering cats!! Wow, some people are severely in need of lives!!

I'm not going to touch the indoor/outdoor cat debate, but now that I have my first kitty ever, it surprises me to hear that Mary Anne lets Tigger wander around outside. I had forgotten about that. She seems like she'd be super protective and have him be an indoor-only cat. But at least in good old Stoneybrook you don't have to worry about your kitty getting run over, or having a scuffle with another cat. That would never happen there.

^ haha, it wasn't a debate... these are friendly boards here! I was just surprised to hear that letting cats outdoors is so taboo as it's quite the norm here. I can definitely see the logic to keeping them inside, though.
I agree that MA doesn't seem like the type to let Tigs out of her sight for long, though.

^^She writes her cat postcards, for Pete's sake!! I do agree that it's surprising that she'd let him outside. I would hate to see what she'd do if something ever happened to her kitty.

^ ugghhh... that would be THE most irritating book. Mary Anne would go into mourning. Not that it wouldn't be devestating to lose a cat, but I can just imagine how OTT the book would be.

I don't like hearing Mary Anne go on and on about Tigger. I don't even really like Tigger. I like Mary Anne, I am completely obsessed with my own cats, and normally I like hearing other people talk about their cats. But whenever Mary Anne starts talking about Tigger, I get really, really annoyed and I don't know why.
Yes, I also don't understand why she wanted a GRAY TIGER CAT to name Tigger rather than an orange one, and I really don't understand why she lets her little kitten roam around outside by himself. She so doesn't seem like the type to do that.

While I'm not really a "cat lover" I have been known to talk baby-talk to them and talk about them but MA's seeming obsession with Tigger really bugs me and so does he. Like you, not sure exactly why. Also totally agree with all of the other points though my mom and dad do call every tiger cat of any color "Tigger" (and every black one is Blacky, butterscotch is Buddy, gray is Grady....you get the picture. Drives me totally insane even though they are barn cats so we go through them like crazy and it's hard to keep them all straight.)

I never liked Tigger I was and still am a dog person. I like cats too, but I guess a kitten just seemed to typical of a cat for MA to have.
In Mary Anne and the Search for Tigger she says that she let's Tigger go out on his own because keeping him trapped is what her father used to do to her.

^ For some reason I think that Kristy's grip on the BSC is more confining than her father's strictness.

Why did Tigger remain a kitten eternally? Kittenhood is SO fleeting.

I always hated when MA would call Tigger "Mousekins".
