when i was little i thought buyers literally just went shopping for a living, so i never questioned whether she could land that job, because it always sounded perfect for her :] I get the feeling that that was the message AMM was suggesting to the readers ("Mrs. McGill is great at buying things for herself, so she could easily become a professional buyer!").

^I thought that, too. Stacey repeatedly told us how great she (S) was at hunting down a bargain. Like Marilyn and Carolyn did on their one shopping trip, I think Stacey (more than once) made a production of telling us how she bargain hunts and makes certain to always get a deal. I also wondered if part of Mrs. McGill's job might be "mystery shopper." I'm still not quite sure what that truly means but doesn't it have to do with someone from one company buying similar products from a competitor to check them out/compare or am I off base? I Googled and it also means someone who reports on another store's customer service. I'm not sure I see Maureen being more "on the road" like that than just at one (typical) location but think something like that might be perfect for Stacey. She could also use her math skills to create reports on her findings.

^ Mystery shopper and buyer are so different though. I think a buyer's job would be a very coveted position. I guess I could possibly see a scenario in which the Bellair's staff are sooo impressed with Maureen's "sophisticated chic from NYC" flare that her professional experience didn't seem as important. Stoneybrook is a small community. But then, those in corporate Bellairs would probably be from Stamford or some other bigger city where NYC wasn't as big of a deal. Maybe Maureen got the job because she's attractive? There could be theoretically many possibilities. I just don't think she would have gotten the job (as easily) today.

Rachel on Friends went from being a coffee shop waitress to a buyer at Bloomingdale's in NYC. I think. It's been a while since I've watched an episode. Yes, I realize that was also fiction.

oldhickory: me, too. At least about what a buyer did. I never questioned whether Maureen could do the job or not.
sparklymouse: this book also reminds me of Friends and vice vera. Or rather I think of Rach getting an interview for a buyer position at Saks Fifth Avenue and she said that she would be shopping for a living and Phoebe said it was like the Mother Ship was calling her home. (Rachael didn't get that job. She did work at Bloomingdale's, though I'm not sure she was a buyer there. But she may have been, it's been a while for me to see those episodes as well.)

I don't like Maureen as represented in the BSC TV series as much as in the movie (although she's not even *that* great but slightly better in my eyes).
I know that McGill is a fairly popular surname but I wonder if Ann got the idea from McGill University in Montreal, which is one of Canada's finest.

^Mal sends Mrs. McGill a postcard (I think in MA and Too Many Boys) and calls her "Mrs. McGillacuddy." Was that something from "Lucy?"

If so, omg to Ann and her Lucy obsession. Seriously.
Edited to add. I digress. Someone could probably say the same thing about me and the BSC so...

Mal went on to explain her joke to Mrs. McGill in the same post card. If you have to explain it then it's probably not that funny to begin with. And also, way to waste half the card on your greeting.
