I like Mr and Mrs Kishi. I think they might be my favourite BSC parents.
I don't think they are as strict as they are made out to be - I think they are just normal. How strict can they be to allow their 13 year old daughter her own phoneline?
I love how they're such a close-knit family and how loving they are to Claud - the reassurance when she thinks she is adopted and when she is put back a grade.

It does bug me that the characters are quite good parents and yet, even with the mother being a librarian, so restrictive about books including being anti-Nancy Drew, to the point that Claudia thinks (probably accurately?) that they equate Nancy Drew with junk food.

I think they thought they were doing what was best which made them look strict, but really it was just that they didn't totally understand Claudia.

Well, honestly, Mr. and Mrs. K are my least favorite BSC parents. They're strict and too expecting of their daughters. But I think we would get a better view of them if Claudia and Janine opened up to them more often.

What do you mean, too expecting?

I mean that they expect Claudia to do well in school and they expect Janine to be a physicist and they just seem to put a lot of pressure on their daughters. In one book, Claudia made a B minus and they expected her to get an A. And they expect her to enjoy "practical" and "conservative" books.

I don't like Mr.and Mrs. Kishi. I find them too strict and hypocritical to be liked. At least Claudia is reading something, you dolts. I hate it that they favor Janine for every little thing.
Frankly, I blame the Kishis's for Claudia turning out the way she is.

How can they be strict? They let Claudia wear whatever she wants and just because they won't let her read Nancy Drew or eat sweets, I don't call that being strict.

I don't think they're very strict unless it's school stuff. I agree that they should be happy that Claudia is reading at all, much less care that it's Nancy Drew.

Yeah I agree on the Nancy Drew front, I never understood that. Everything, I kind of understood. Even if they were a little hard on Claud about the grades, I think their intentions were rightly placed.

It's probably considered strict if Claud hates being told what to eat..it depends on what they said..it's one thing if they told her it's fine to have in moderation but not all the time, but if they told her she couldn't have treats AT ALL when their own diets are not particularly healthy, that's another thing..not as if they're like the Schafer's so the latter would be kind of hypocritical.. As for the Nancy Drews, I echo those who said at least she is reading...I think reading comics/manga is more frivolous than mysteries..

Like if Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid existed back in the 80s and 90s, I'd understand if Mr and Mrs K would be against that. But Nancy Drews?!

Also I could understand them flipping out if she read porn or anything else that's not for minors to read.

The weird thing for me about the Kishis is that if you read the exposition which explains they don't approve of candy or Nancy Drew books (they should be glad their nonacademic daughter likes reading anything and they COULD help her find other more challenging mystery books if they really have a problem), they sound strict. But when you're actually reading one of the books and seeing Claudia interact with her parents, they're actually perfectly all right.

In the BSC movie book Claud was once lectured about her tastes/characteristics..plus she hinted in a book that her parents didn't even want her eating regular popcorn, which is kind of ridiculous as plain popcorn IS semi-healthy compared to sugary snacks. And again, it's not like John and Rioko's diets were anything to brag about since it did not equate to what the Schafers ate in any way.
