Loved the books with Karen's pen pal Maxie ;D. The field trip was fun but also kind of unrealistic only because at my school if you had a substitute teacher (even long-term, like Mrs. Hoffman was for Ms. Colman while she was on maternity leave) you usually weren't allowed to take field trips.

I forgot that Maxie makes another appearance in this book. I can agree with you sweetvalley for having a sub and not being allowed to go on field trips!

I liked the trip. It sounded fun. I did feel a little bad for David Michael, even if he was being a brat.

Wow. I guess I have a lot to say about this book!
1. This was one of the later books written by Ann herself. I can tell because there is no ghostwriter mentioned at the beginning AND it seems to be dedicated to Nora Godwin Allen, who I am assuming is Laura Godwin's niece. Interesting that Laura and Ann were even a couple in 1996! I am also assuming that Nora likes dinosaurs...
2. I bet this book was hard to read for kids in Grade 3. As an adult, even I had a difficult time pronouncing some of the dinosaur names, haha.
3. I liked the fact that they went to NYC and got to hang out with their pen pals again although it seemed VERY unrealistic to me for a 2nd grade class to go on such a big trip (and so far).

Others dedicated to a Laura: #66 Karen's Monsters Dawn Diary 1 And I think I remember seeing "For L.G." in Winter Vacation (maybe someone with a copy could double check) and it's from the late 80s...

That is SOOOOOOOOO CUTE! I love the Ann is a lezbo. I am a gay male myself and I love lesbians. You know how old couples have a cute factor? Well lesbians have the same cute factor for me!

Also, Laura Godwin took the picture of Ann that appears in the later BSC and LS books (where Ann has her head slightly tilted, wearing a striped shirt).

That would have been cool if it was. To me, it does look like somewhere around there (or the Hamptons).

I read this for the first time recently, and even though Karen does something she really shouldn't do (leave the rest of her class and go to a gift shop even though she knows she's not allowed to), I liked it because she really did do it for a good reason, and also that's definitely the kind of thing I would've done when I was a kid. Only I wouldn't have gotten lost.

See, I really didn't like that Karen did that and got away with it. I know her intentions were good, but she was told not to, and going off by herself anywhere, let alone NY is so stupid. It was also bratty of her to hold everyone else up just so she could go to the gift shop. Not cool Karen!

Wow no one has read (or at least read and commented) on this book in quite awhile. Kylie, that Karen got away with going to the gift shop didn't really bother me because of why she did it. I wish David Michael had gotten to somehow go on the trip. Maybe Watson or Elizabeth could have taken the day off from work and been a room parent on the trip so DM could come. I also had the thought that it would have been interesting had David Michael tried out Stoneybrook Academy prior to or right after this book. He must know Karen has gotten to go on other school trips (zoo, circus, pet store--for the guinea pigs) are three I can think of while (that we know about) he never went on any. It would seem to me that maybe he would want to try out Stoneybrook Academy if even for just this reason. I know he was attached to SES for his friends. I also thought it sounded like if he could have tried out another school and not because Watson and Elizabeth thought he'd do better at it but maybe because he thought he might and enjoy it more, he would have. Just a thought. I also have to wonder about Mr. Berger's second grade class. They must get awfully jealous of the KIMCC! I hope they got to visit the museum a different day. I totally agree that this trip sure sounded like a whirlwind and awfully long day. Maybe in Stoneybrook like years and time in general, field trip time is somehow suspended or especially made.

I think the big reason given in the books why DM wanted to stay at his own school was that he was really involved in their theater program and Karen's school didn't do plays or have drama club. Trying out a bunch of activities/field trips apparently wasn't as big of a draw as sticking with an activity he really liked. I did kind of wonder if he would regret the choice later on if he moved on to other interests but hopefully Watson and Elizabeth would have been open to the option of him switching later on if he really wanted to.

^ I didn't think of that, Scrounge, good point. I do remember DM being so happy Watson and Elizabeth had agreed to pay the fee so he and Kristy could stay at their old neighborhood schools. In "Karen's Big Fight," it was good to see DM excited about being in the Winnie the Pooh play. I also wondered what might have happened had he been placed in Mr. Berger's room instead of Ms. Colman's. Maybe not being in the same classroom as Karen might have made Stoneybrook Academy more appealing.
