While it totally makes sense that Kristy would compare the status of the club to the White House (she became such a dictator and obsessed with rules and officialness as the series progressed), I wondered when I first read that if, in addition to desperately trying to discourage Abby from filling in, Kristy all along never really thought much of the title of alternate officer, even though she created it. It's a bit of an insult to Dawn, especially: "You didn't seem to have any particularly defining skills but we loved you anyway and wanted you to act as a 'substitute!'" Junior officer is similarly worthless. But, she has a fancier induction ceremony for Mal and Jessi when they join, another slap to Dawn!

icequeen, Dawn is my favorite too! She's been my favorite since I was a kid. I'm not sure what exactly attracted me to her so much back then - I was definitely more of a "Mary Anne" type of kid - but for some reason I just really adored her and I still do! Well, nowadays I love her hippie-ness and the fact that she's a vegetarian & cares about the environment, but I definitely wasn't thinking about that kind of thing when I was young.
And I like CA Dawn better than Stoneybrook Dawn. She just seems so in her element in CA, and I love her friendship with Sunny. (I always thought it was nice that they remained close even after she moved across the country.)

When Dawn joined, they were just getting to know each other and Kristy was still kinda jealous of her friendship with Mary Anne. I actually would have liked to see Dawn and Kristy's relationship explored some more. I haven't read the book with the Abby thing, but maybe Kristy was more threatened by Abby than she would be with Claudia filling in for her. I wonder if the alternate officer role was foreshadowing the alternating of members in that office? Did they know they would be moving Dawn back eventually?

I think Dawn's no meat fanaticism took place in the later books, because earlier you did see her eat meat...I think it was the ghost writers that really made her into a vegetarian

I think Dawn's no meat fanaticism took place in the later books, because earlier you did see her eat meat...I think it was the ghost writers that really made her into a vegetarian Dawn ate chicken in one or two of the books, and she mentioned that she just didn't really LIKE red meat and thought it was unhealthy. Unlike in one of the late books where she yells at Kristy for eating "murdered mammals." I really liked early Dawn. She was great with the Barretts and seemed really easygoing and friendly. I think I started disliking her as the ghostwriters made her just the opposite: uptight and kind of snotty when it came to her beliefs.

^ Mine too. I feel like the character really changed into someone I don't like much. Don't know if the change was intentional or not but I loved Dawn as a kid and she is one of my least favorites now. Maybe I'm just noticing things, though, that I didn't pick up on back then. I was fascinated by the fact that she was an "individual", which is what I always felt I was and am.

Ironically, the more Dawn changed, she became less of an individual and just like the hive-minded PETA-types I've known over the years.

I LOVED early Dawn, but then she became my least favorite sitter. I practically threw a party when she went to California. Darn you, ghosties.

When I was younger I always was fascinated by Dawn. Now that I am older I realize it was early Dawn that fascinated me, the older later one just turned into somebody that was really different.

I liked early Dawn too. She wasn't given labels yet that she had to subscribe to, such as her vegetarianism, save-the-planet mentality, etc.

I like how Dawn was at the beginning of the series. She really was an individual then, but the ghostwriters had to go and ruin her.

Aww I like later Dawn. I like Dawn all the time. We have a lot of the same beliefs and even though she can be over-zealous... she's only 13 so I excuse it. I would never say the things she says about what other people eat or anything, but I guess I kinda understand why she does because she's SO passionate about it and I guess overly eager to share her thoughts! I still love her!
