The more I read about Abby, the more I like her. She used to bother me with her constant jokes and puns but now I’m starting to gain some insight and think that a lot of this might be her attempt to deal with all of the problems in her life. Like someone pointed out in another thread, I think she is pretty lonely and is essentially raising herself. Also, after her dad died, I think she felt like she had to take over and provide the humor and keep everything light and help hold the family together – a big burden for a kid or anyone.

^I feel the same way. I didn't like Abby at first for those same reasons. I like her a lot better now. I feel like I understand her character a bit more.

Yeah,I feel that way too. At first I'm annoyed by her jokes and puns, but now I think I like her a lot more. I agree with you too, about the part that Abby felt that she had to provide humor, and everything.

I like Abby more now than I did before. I feel so sad thinking about her father dying and her being lonely. I agree with aln that the jokes are her way of dealing. She said that her father loved jokes and laughing, right? (I have only one Abby book and only a handful of the others she is in).

^ She did say he was the one who provided the humor, which is why I think she felt she had to replace him in that role. Anna was the quiet one so Abby had to be the one more like their dad. My theory, anyway. ;D

funny this is brought up because i noticed in Abby's Un-Valentine she seems to hate valentines day and i'm only into the first few pages SO i cant' really say much BUT i kinda wonder, does she really hate it a lot because she's afraid of finding love because her father died and she has a view on relationships in which the partner could die and you be all alone i can understand being scared that death could take away your lover, so she might want to keep her heart closed.
Her sarcasm does bother me in some books, because it seems to be like a cover for her and she's covering up her real feelilngs by using sarcasm. sometimes sarcasm can be used as a shield to the inner soul...or so i've heard. Not like i root through psychology magazines or psychological topics........though i shoiuld, i mean, i love when a BSC book has deep rooted psychological issues and people with psychological problems, that makes such an interesting topic for me.....

OK i finished UnValentine, and i have to say, i think its the best Abby Book. I agree with Abby, because, i don't think its right to humor someone if they like you but you don't have any intention of datingthem
i feel the same, because, if you don't like someone, if you go with them they are going to be happy, and estatic and then you won't be ever giving back the emotion to them and its not right to give the person hopes and dreams if you just dont like them.
She did act a little delibrate cynical in the sonnet classes, BUT, i still feel like what i said about Abby keeping her heart on guard and her feeligns in check, i think, it being something she's scared of getting close to.
