I know there's a thread for the Sleepover Friends series, but I found a description in one that proves there's apparently a Claudia in every group of friends. Lauren describes Stephanie: "she's always coming up with new ideas about clothes and style, like wearing her sweatshirt upside down, with the sleeves over a pair of bright tights on her legs instead of her arms." So many questions. First of all, how is that even possible? Did she wear a belt to keep it up around her waist, and if so wouldn't that make her butt look freakishly big and baggy? Why would you risk having a big neck hole right beneath your crotch? So, so strange. Thank God I didn't have a Claudia type friend.

So I was reading "Kristy + Bart = ?" the other day and Claudia takes a job at the Prezzisos and she shows up in "a bowling shirt with the name 'Ralph' sewn over the front pocket, and matching loose rayon pants, gathered at the waist with a leather strap. She'd pinned her hair with a barrette in the shape of two bowling pins."
Now, honestly, this would not strike me as that bad, because unlike many of Claudia's looks, I can actually remember when bowling shirts/maintenance uniforms/scrubs were somewhat trendy--as opposed to the "oversized purple top with turqoise leggings. . .with fabric paint she'd painted a beautiful unicorn on the top and decorated the leggings with designs in the same colors. From her ears dangled paper-mache earrings she'd made in the shape of unicorn heads," she sports a mere 4 books later in "Stacey's Broken Heart." Both books are from 1996, which is the year I finished eighth grade and actually left middle school, but I know which look would have gone done better (or at least less badly) wear I live!
The bowling pin barrette is dumb, but hey, at least she's not wearing bowling shoes and little bowling ball earrings too (THAT WE KNOW OF). But what's great about this scene is Mrs. P's reaction:
Ha! Claudia is pwned! Seriously though, it's a good thing the parents of Stoneybrook are so sweet and broad-minded, except when they're book-banners, bigots and censors of third-grade plays, or you'd think some parent would have freaked out about Claudia's "style" along the way.
I can't think of any examples, but I remember thinking a lot of the time some of those clothes (Stacey's, too) were really dumb to wear baby-sitting--although nothing as bad as SWEATSHIRT PANTS WTF. I would probably get tagged with the neat/preppy/casual label a la Mary Anne, but I always wore jeans and pulled my hair back, because I figured I'd be sitting on the floor, and babies like to pull hair.

Haha, I love that reaction from Mrs. P! I used to think the unicorn top was cute, but I seriously doubt it looked all that beautiful and professional. And honestly, she thought Kristy and MA dressed like babies, a huge unicorn head shirt reminds me of Jill's ensemble in CD. There's another example in book 2 where Claudia wears these frilly teddy bear barrettes in her hair and Mrs. Newton asks where she got them to buy a pair for the baby.

Hey! Teddy bears are in! ;D
I love that there are actually reactions like that. So not everyone thinks Claudia's outfits are chilly fresh after all.

hah that reaction from Mrs. P is classic. I would imagine Mrs. P was frightened by a LOT of Claudia's outfits.

I always wondered how Claudia and Stacey could get away with wearing all these OVERSIZED outfits without looking like they were a five year old wearing their parents' dress-up clothes. Of course, on anyone else, it would look strange. But on Claudia, it looked great. There is a site that has some of Claudia's Chapter 2 outfits. It isn't a complete list, but it's a great start. piperrhiannon.livejournal.com/72088.html

I think I found Claudia's worst outfit. I usually laugh at them or don't pay too much attention, but this one just takes the cake. In #44 (Dawn and the Big Sleepover): Claudia greeted us at the door to her room with her hair in a ponytail at the top of her head, held up by a huge barette in the shape of a bone, like Pebbles in The Flintstones. It made her hair bounce when she moved. She was even wearing a Pebbles-type outfit - a pink, off-the-shoulder blouse with huge polka dots and a ragged bottom over black tights. On anyone else it would have looked dumb or babyish, but on Claudia it looked cool.I think I had a Halloween costume like that one year.

I read something in one of the books about Claud wearing an earcuff??? I've heard of ear muffs but never an ear cuff. Any idea what that is?
