I've never heard of Paris Magic...either it's pretty obscure or made up for the book.

I just tried to find info about Paris Magic, too, and it looks like it's not real. I always thought it was! Boo and bullfrogs!

thats too bad Paris Magic wasn't real! Maybe its because in the beginning of the books, Ann didn't have permission to use names?
Once, when writing a short story in a class, my teacher told me that i wasnt allowed to use brand names in household items or list real titles because of legal rights that are owned by companies? Oh that was so long ago like, around 1996! wish teachers were more honest with their students about using stuff like that,
now, in the good ol year of 2000 and later, it seems like kids can write about Pokemon and various Nickelodeon people in Fanfiction basis and turn it in for credit. If i did that...i'd get in trouble back when i was in school. >> Man, if its an "issue" or not i dont know, since, i don't really feel super intregued to go research this topic. maybe my teacher was just uninformed or paranoid he could be assisting a student in doing something stupid and illegal in the far far future if my works were ever published? XD
Though, i do notice Ann's books mentioning more things like Disney Movies and products, etc. maybe the BSC was such a franchise they could write off the legaliaties and all???
Like, they mentioned Cats and Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera. Les Mis and Phantom was mentioned in Abby in Wonderland, the props that were rented by Grandma Elsie.

^ maybe i will research this...but later.
Then again, perhaps my teacher in 6th grade was trying to get us sttudents to "Use our own" and create, instead of using another's works for creative basis.

^ Not to sound stupid ;D but what is Starlight Express about? This is an interesting topic. I know the girls went to a Broadway show in Stacey's Mistake. Did it say which one? What other Broadway shows has Stacey been to or mentioned? I haven't seen it before, but I do know that Starlight Express is an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical which is about trains (actors literally being trains as characters) revolving around a big race. Like Laine said, the actors do perform on roller skates. Here's a clip from the London Cast - www.youtube.com/watch?v=cje9BJ2hovQ&feature=relatedMy favourite musical! I was gutted when it closed here. Myself and some other people were actually featured on a BBC documentry over here when it closed as we used to go and see it dressed up in character, complete with roller skates and we'd reenact the scenes outside. It was awesome - people would pose with us for pictures and everything! It's a pretty simple story - the steam train being the underdog, in love with the pretty new observation car who gets her head turned by flashy Electric and sexy Diesal. It's absolutely amazing. *sings* wooooo-woooo-wooo-woooo nobody can do it like a steam train.....

I'm not quite sure what you're teacher was talking about because you can use brand names and real names in books. Authors use it all the time. Just think of all of the Nancy Drew references in the BSC. ;D What you can't do is use a trademarked idea and try to sell it as your own (your own version of books titled "The Baby-Sitters Club" or something like that) but AMM could have mentioned that they watched "The Wizard of Oz" as long as she wasn't trying to say it was "her" movie. Another thing you can't do (with anything - trademarked or not) is take someone else's ideas and try to pass them off as your own (take an entire BSC story or big plot ideas and "incorporate it" into your own story and say you wrote the whole thing) At least this is how I always understood the laws, etc. ;D

I remember a reference being made to Thoroughly Modern Millie in one of the books.

I think you're right, just the mention of something is okay.

I wish they would have told a bit more about the McGills actually going to the musicals. I would have liked to see them interacting at the shows. ;D

I can see Stacey enjoying "Phantom of the Opera", and when she gets to college, she might be out for midnight showings of "Rocky Horror". What do you think?

Claudia would make her go to Rocky Horror. It'd be fantastic. I could just see Stacey and Mr. McGill at Spring Awakening and the awkward that would ensue. It amazes me that people still seem to be of the mind that if it's theatre, it's going to be great for all ages. I've seen SO MANY people bring little kids into Rent, it's not even funny. I think Rent's great for anyone, say, 12 and up, and if you know your kids and your morals/standards then go for it, but people taking their five year olds? Not cool. Especially when they're sitting on your lap and I can't see around your kid's freaking head. I mean.... But, yeah, there are things, offensive wise, in theatre that they probably wouldn't even do in movies. Maybe since you're looking at a certain group of people who would enjoy it, versus a mainstream majority, I guess.
