I'm re-reading Baby-sitters Haunted House, and in one chapter, Mallory visits Logan at the Rosebud to talk to him about a baby-sitting job. He already committed to working a second shift, and she starts screaming at him, mangling a loaf of bread in the process.
There’s the stalking Harriet Hayes thing, then the whole “you’re a liar because your fiction books don’t reflect your real life,” says the person who wrote about a mouse wearing leggings.
And let’s not forget the “let’s dye my hair platinum blonde when I’m in California.”
So is Mallory mentally unstable, or is it just the hazards of being eleven?

Heh. I loved that scene in Haunted House, when she's waving that bread around. And especially later, in Logan's letter to Mary Anne, he says that he loves her, even though some of her friends are pretty weird. Haha! As for Mallory being mentally unstable? I don't think so. I think it's the hazards of being eleven. We all did and thought stupid things at that age, and clearly, Mallory is no exception!

I don't think Mallory is mentally unstable at all. I think she's just realistic. And I also don't think it's just her being eleven. I can't think of many people who never get emotional, overreact, lose their temper, make dumb assumptions or try to change their appearance because of insecurities (clairol and cover girl are kept in business by them in some degree ;D) In fact, I think I've done most of the above just today. Actually, I think Mallory is one of the most "real" characters and can really relate to her in a lot of cases. She might have faults but don't we all? I also love the bread mangling. This is something I could see myself doing. I am a very easily frustrated person ;D As for Henrietta Hayes, I just reread and don't really see it as stalking (or maybe I am just a stalker too ;D). Maybe a little but I think Mal just really admired her and wanted very much to meet her. I can relate to that. Can also relate to being crushed (and expressing it as anger) when my idol is not the person I thought. So, maybe I'm mentally unstable too ;D

Oh wow I've never read the book with the bread thing. That sounds classic, I need to get my hands on a copy of that Mallory is a weirdo, for sure. I understand being self-conscious and stuff at 11, but geeeez she just takes normal traits a bit far sometimes. Like in Dream Horse where she is desperately trying to befriend the kids in her class and seems pretty d**n oblivious to the fact that they just aren't interested! Anyone know who wrote #1 fan? Because the whole thing w/ her all pissy with the author is absolutely ridiculous. Mal has written TONS of make believe stories!

The bread incident is indeed classic. I think she strangles it to death because she couldn't talk loudly, but had to whisper angrily to him.
I'm not sure who wrote #1 Fan, but Malcolm Hillgartner and Jahnna Beecham wrote many Mal books, I think.

I don't think she's unstable, just kind of high-strung, and she often seems really oblivious to how people react to her behavior (except for the Spaz Girl arc, which was a total deus ex machina anyway). Like sotypical's example of how she kept trying to make friends with the kids in her riding class and just never seemed to get that they just weren't that into her.

^^Aah, better put, mckay. OK not mentally unstable (though it's funnier put this way), but I think the poor girl internalizes things until she snaps. I'm afraid she'll go postal one day. (Hmmm...do I sense some fanfic here?)

Mal is a strange one, imo. Sometimes she goes a bit crazy!

(Hmmm...do I sense some fanfic here?) I would totally read that fanfic. Caludia Keeshi: Middul Skool Momma (or however it's misspelled, I forget off the top of my head) has some hilarious Mallory moments in which she's returned to SMS as a psychotic English teacher. Or maybe she'll go on a killing spree someday and the only clue left at the scene would be...glitter. The kind found on sweatshirts from Bellair's.

I'm rereading caludia keeshi: middul skool mamma and having been Lol'ing at parts...here's a good mallory one:
Mallory finally snapped when Duke University rejected her. And Northwestern. And Bryn Mawr. And Brandeis. At least Stoneybrook U. let her in. But, it didn't matter, all that rejection twisted Mal up inside, leaving her bitter, jaded, and homicidal.
Yes, that's right. Mallory Pike is a sickopath. With a license to teach.

I never thought of Mallory as unstable. Sure she did some crazy things at times, but we all have. I know for a fact I have done my share of weird things, especially when I was younger.

I don't think she's all that strange, either. In my opinion, "normal" just depends on whose perspective it comes from. Claudia's pretty weird and abnormal to me a lot of times ;D

Mallory strangling that loaf of bread is one of my happiest BSC memories.
I can imagine Mallory becoming a bit unhinged in later years. She has a lot of unrealistic expectations for herself and others and because of that, is due for some major disappointments in her life.

There's weird, but then there's Mallory. All the baby-sitters had their strange quirks--Kristy was unusually bossy, Mary Ann cried at everything, Jessi thought everyone hated her because she was black, etc. I'm a little strange, but I found the bread incident pretty disturbing for an eleven year-old.
