valuemeal, I agree, I could relate to some of Mallory's traits from grade 5-7 though I would also say I had some Claudia and Mary Anne too at that age. Had the big glasses, hated volleyball and getting hit in the face ended up breaking my glasses, and what was once really nice hair was starting to get frizzy faster and all of that with puberty.
I also agree that her parents treated her like a mini adult way too many times, and I really think boarding school was for the better so she could grow and have space, though I didn't think so before and felt she was running.

I think Mallory sitting on the floor (with Jessi) while the others sat in higher places and them being thirteen had a psychological effect on her. And this is someone coming from being the oldest sibling in a large group of kids and is used to being the one in charge among them.

Not just that, those kids and her parents walk all over her and take advantage of her

I don't think Mallory is mentally unstable either. I think Mallory is a typical eleven year old. There are millions of eleven year olds who has low self-esteem about their body image. Not only that, she was always forced to "help" take care of seven other kids, she hung out with five older girls (I agree, Amalia, that it could have a psychological effect on her for that), and she was pretty socially awkward/shy. I think Mallory is a very realistic character. In fact, I think she is the only one in the BSC who's truly "real". I don't have Babysitters' Club Haunted House but the bread part sounds classic! I'd love to read it.

I could see her having some pretty serious self esteem issues later on, although she does come across as so stable at times. But the basis is there, and she did do some weird things!

I agree, I think maybe down the line she could have some self esteem issues, but I don't think that is abnormal for a teenage girl.

I'm re-reading Baby-sitters Haunted House, and in one chapter, Mallory visits Logan at the Rosebud to talk to him about a baby-sitting job. He already committed to working a second shift, and she starts screaming at him, mangling a loaf of bread in the process. There’s the stalking Harriet Hayes thing, then the whole “you’re a liar because your fiction books don’t reflect your real life,” says the person who wrote about a mouse wearing leggings. And let’s not forget the “let’s dye my hair platinum blonde when I’m in California.” So is Mallory mentally unstable, or is it just the hazards of being eleven? I'm actually really offended by this-she's not mentally unstable. She's 11. She's one of the more interesting of the BSC sitters.

I don't think that mallory has unrealistic expectations of herself. She wants to be an author and all, but I don't know that she expects she will be. If anything I would consider Mal to have fairly low self esteem and expect the worst out of herself Poor girl. Disagree with this totally.
