Sort of off topic... It really bugged when Stacey's diabetes kept changing! At the start, she was really strict with her diet, and the amount she ate, and when she ate and all that. But then later, she eats anything that Claudia throws at her as long as it doesn't have sugar. ?! I know, that was really weird. Dawn would also eat less-healthy-food at the meetings, just so she could have something to eat. Weird. Also, I think in the first Stacey book, she mentioned how she had te be careful with the candy she ate, when she ate it and how much of it etc. Later on, candy is banned from her diet forever. I know some people with diabetes and they are much more like "watch out with the candy you eat" than "do not eat candy!" Some even need some candy at times, for some sugar reasons. So, uhm: Huh?

So I think it's Stacey's birthday today - April 3. Happy 13th, Boontsie! (If she had ever aged she'd be a wonderfully sophisticated 32 )

Whoo hoo - Stacey's birthday is the same as mine! That's where the similarities end though!
Re the diabetes diet thing, I remember when my grandfather died (This is totally related), and he had diabetes and we found jars of wine gums and minties and other lollies in his house. And I was like huh? But he's a diabetic...Stacey's a diabetic...and she can't eat sugar, so how come he can? This was before I realised the BSC books weren't an authority on all things. At the time I was totally confused, and everytime he ate ice cream or whatever (before he died, obviously) I was freaked out that he'd go into a coma or die or whatever was implied would happen to Stacey. I'd totally forgotten that until now!

I remember reading in a magazine about diabetics traditionally being stereotyped as overweight and wondering how that could be, when the BSC always made a point of Stacey's enforced diet keeping her nice and slim.
Also, I cannot hear about someone drinking water out of cupped hands without immediately remembering that scene in Stacey's Emergency. For years after reading that book, any time I felt thirsty, there would always be a niggling worry that I had diabetes and would be stuck eating an apple while everyone else ate ice-cream (like in Boy-Crazy Stacey).

What was up with Stacey freaking out so much in Stacey's Emergency about having to drink water out of her hands, anyway? I remember reading that and thinking, "Wait I do that everytime I brush my teeth. Am I totally disgusting??"

What was up with Stacey freaking out so much in Stacey's Emergency about having to drink water out of her hands, anyway? TOTAL word. I never found anything disgusting about it, but didn't say anything because I thought maybe it's something most people actually DO find disgusting. Stacey made it sound like she was being forced to drink her own urine or something.

And drinking urine is not that bad for you I've heard. I read somewhere that some Buddhists actually do it.

^ oh apparently it's full of protein or whatever and people have done it in life/death situations, but still, that's something most people WOULD find truly disgusting and an example of extreme desperation, not merely drinking fresh, clean water out of ones' hands.

Yeah, Stacey's picky. If she could have eggs mixed (or whatever) into her hair when getting perms then what's wrong with using your hands to drink water.

Well, if it was out of a public sink, I can see her hesitation. But if it's life and death, then obviously it's worth it. If it's just the thought of her own hands...I have no idea what's wrong with her. If they're dirty, she can just wash them first.
It seems like each of them have something that grosses them out. Stacey and this thing and vomit. Kristy and blood. Mary Anne and...Kristy's comments about food? Okay, so I can't think of anymore. Well, Claudia and good grades...

I think Kristy had a fear of lightning (Kristy and Haunted Mansion). Dawn - maybe being in a foreign city that has a decent crime level.

Ah yes, her fear of New York. Oh, and sugar disgusts her.
