I don't think Fudge's mom was spending 5000 a month--in the EIGHTIES--on jewelry from Tiffany's though. Plus Stacey shops at Bloomingdales all the freaking time and the clothes there are like 300, 400 dollars for a dress.

I think Stacey is pretty wealthy. IDK why they don't touch on it. But like, in Euro vacation, when they go shopping, Stacey runs to the designer dresses and her mom is talking about how Stacey has really expensive outfits.

I tend to agree with the theory that Stacey sees Laine as being rich, and herself as being average. However, when you take her move to Stoneybrook into account, I'm not sure if it holds up. I mean, if her life in NY was "average," what is her life in Stoneybrook? Nearing poverty level? Or is it just "life in the country?" I think it's fun to read about Stacey's lifestyle. I love when she randomly talks about going to Broadway shows and expensive restaurants and fancy stores like it's nothing. Running to the designer dresses in European Vacation was just so Stacey-like.

I'm on the other side of the world and well aware that NYC is one of the most expensive places to live. I just wondered if that was always the case, considering so many books seem to feature characters living there without any indication that they're rich. Wouldn't the McGill's family's wealth be a bigger factor in Stacey's sophistication than the simple fact that she zomg comes from New York City... I mean, if they didn't have money, she wouldn't be able to afford all the latest "urban chic" designer fashions even if she was a native NYC-er. Probably appropriate for a rich girl, though ;D - shows the differences in attitude between someone who grew up with money and someone who's mother married into it (Kristy).

There are definitely ways to do NYC very cheaply, but Stacey does not do these things. I basically only eat at places where one can eat for under ten dollars.

I've never been to Conneticut but would somebody being from New York City be that big of a deal? They're not that far apart, right? A native New Yorker may cause a stir in the midwest (or Western Canada where I live) but would it even be that rare in a place like Stoneybrook?

Yeah, you'd think with NYC being only an hour away, it wouldn't be that awe inspiring.

Yeah, I would have thought that Stoneybrook had more commuters.

^Especially since there's a freakin' train station right in town with a route that goes to NYC. The girls could sneak off to NYC for the day without their parents even knowing.

Like they did in Welcome Home, Mary Anne, which is the only bsc book that really made it clear how close they were to the city.

They really do that? Awesome, I've never read that one. Anyway, I was thinking the same thing, when NYC is so close, why is it such a big deal? I would picture the girls having visited it quite often with their parents when they were younger.

Mallory even mentions in Mallory on Strike that her family refers to nyc as "the city," because it's so close. But more often they're all, OMG! NYC!!

I always thought it was strange how it was too far for Mr McGill to commute from NYC to Stoneybrook at the start of the series, but at the end of the series, Mrs Stevenson does that commute daily.

Mr. Mcgill's commute excuse was just an excuse to move out of the city. They wanted stacey to be in the country and stuff.

I just noticed how funny Stacey can be in several of her narrations. Some of the stuff from her point of view and her notebook entries in the other girls' books have also made me laugh recently. I think some of her books, even the serious ones, have a few of the funniest moments. This caught my attention since she is never portrayed as a comedian like Abby, whose humor seems overdone. Maybe Stacey's humor is more my style - subtle and slightly sarcastic - which is why I like it.
