What I find really weird about Kristy is that she is definitely not my favourite sitter, but I like her books the best, most of the time. I get that with Jessi, too. But some of my favourite books are things like "Kristy and the Snobs", "Kristy and the Walking Disaster" and "Kristy's Mystery Admirer". I did hear that Ann M Martin said Kristy was her favourite babysitter. Maybe that's the reason.

Not with the lesbianism. That's mostly in fan fiction.
I love Kristy. Despite her bossiness. Her dress sense is the same as mine-casual all the way. Although I hate turtlenecks I perfer polo t-shirts. Does this make me preppy?

Ann didn't get the idea for the series, someone at Scholastic did. She was hired to write the first four books when she was a new writer there. Exactly. Jean Feiwel, who was an editor at Scholastic, came up with the idea of a book about teenage baby-sitters, when she noticed that the novel, Ginny's Babysitting Job, was a bestseller. She decided to capitalize on that notion and approached Ann M. Martin, who was freelancing at the time. Though the premise of the books was not Ann's own idea, she was the one who came up with the plot-lines, details, characters, etc. Jean Feiwel: “All I gave Ann was just a glimmer of an idea—a series about a babysitters club. She came up with everything else.”There were only supposed to be four books (one for each original member -- Kristy, Stacey, Claudia, Mary Anne), but they were so successful that Scholastic kept ordering more and more. "Along the way, given the series’ accelerated publishing schedule, Martin—who estimates she wrote between 60 and 80 BSC novels—passed along the bulk of the writing to other authors, though she continued to prepare outlines and edit the novels, and, according to Feiwel, 'approved each book every step of the way, through the blues.'"
So the series was really her baby, even if she didn't originally come up with the idea herself. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-book-news/article/41524-the-baby-sitters-club-to-reconvene.html

Kristy isn't my favorite sitter. (#4 or #5, I guess, after Mallory, MA, Stacey, and Claudia). She is portrayed as practically a tyrant in the other sitters' books. But in her own books she does have a softer, sensitive side and we get more insight of her and we see how her mind works and all. She can be too bossy and overcontrolling and her ego can be too high.
I never thought of her being a lesbian. I don't agree with that. She IS interested in boys. There's Bart, of course. It's been hinted that Kristy liked Alan (well, in the earlier series, that is - like she went to the Halloween hop with him in the phantom caller, the last seventh grade dance in big day I think, and she invited him to MA's birthday party in Logan likes MA). Also she seems to have a crush on Cary and there's Michel in European vacation which I've never read but heard of through this fandom. It's just that she wasn't crazy about boyfriends and boys weren't on the top of her priority list. Now Abby and possibly Mallory...
Also, I don't understand how Kristy is described as immature. So what if she's a tomboy, doesn't care about clothes and makeup, plays sports, and doesn't have a boyfriend? That doesn't equal maturity. It's understandable that Claudia and Stacey thought so. But even MA thought so, too. The only aspects of her immaturity is that she makes jokes about the school lunches and she has a big mouth, but that's it. She's actually very mature - she's dedicated to children, she's a great business woman, she's responsible and respectful, and she's smart, street smart and book smart.
Wow. I guess I do like Kristy more than I thought.

Oddly enough, Kristy was probably my least favorite sitter as a kid, but as I'm rereading the series now (books 1-10 so far), I'm appreciating her more as a character. I think there are more layers to Kristy than we/the BSC give her. There's kind of this wistful quality to some of her scenes with the BSC regarding her moving away from Bradford Court. There's this kind of hidden vulnerability that we get in some of her scenes. Like when MA starts crushing on Logan, she tells Dawn she feels like MA is moving away from her. That was very real and something people go through with their friends. You know, being in a different place from someone you were so close to not long ago. I also like that Kristy can be really funny, like in #9, when Dawn was telling them scary stories and MA said she didn't want to hear it so Kristy told her to leave the room, lol. I also like that Kristy doesn't care about clothes too much. But she loves her family a lot. And she loves the kids she sits for. Kristy can be bossy at times, but I think she also has more charming qualities that I didn't notice before.

I've always been like Kristy in clothes also...kind of grundge and seldom wearing makeup and never caring about fashion trends.
I can completely see Kristy adopting the ultra-grunge look during high school and even as an adult today not being into fashionable clothes or makeup.

If Kristy worked an office job, she’d begrudgingly wear dress pants and nice blouses her good taste wouldn’t allow her otherwise. She did dress up very carefully when she knew she had to.

[ Does it seem far fetched that I could see Kristy deciding to wear a dress? Maybe not like a daily thing but every once in awhile with a fun print. Early in the series she did mention that she liked dressing up (like with her moms wedding).

I could totally see that! And Kristy would rock that dress. She was hot when she dressed up.

True there...I actually can see her in practical dresses or in oxford blouses and simple skirts as an adult businesswoman today, especially when she held staff, board and international meetings with businesses worldwide.

Viking 1 launched to Mars on August 20, 1975 (it landed on July 20, 1976). Maybe she would've watched it on TV as a rerun.
