Allowances seem like something they'd have received in the earlier books (you know, when they were still KIDS as opposed to adults at age 13) but really, it was never mentioned that any parents gave the kids money - not the babysitters or the clients. I remember on one occasion Claudia had to return new shoes she'd bought because she didn't have enough money for art supplies. Strange that her parents wouldn't help her out, she was only 13 after all.

I remember once when Claudia and Stacey went on a shopping spree. Stacey had to return most of her stuff because her babysitting money couldn't cover it, but it didn't mention what happened to Claudia who charged all of her expenses on her mom's credit card.

^ Really? 0_o that's weird.
I think I remember Stacey saying (in one of the earlier books, I think Kristy's great idea) that her parents pay for her clothes and she has to buy all the other stuff, like jewelry, etc.

I don't remember Stacey saying her parents paid for her clothes... Then again, I don't know the first books very well. I do remember the scene that mcpon mentioned, where Stacey has to return the clothes she bought (what book *was* that?!).

^ I think it was Kristy's Worst Idea, although I may be wrong.

Oh! That's right! And in that scene, Jamie Newton is angry with them for not baby-sitting for him any more...

I always found it odd the girls were snacking at 5:30 as well. Don't most people eat a snack like, right when they get home from school? But they're always running into Claudia's room (right as the clock turns to 5:30, narrowly avoiding a Look, of course!) and they're STARVING.
I guess the junkfood thing was just an excuse to give Claudia SOME kind of personality, like omg eclectic crazy artist girl! Eating snickers and doritos, no matter what time of day!

Maybe they don't have a snack because they know that they are going to be eating a Claudia's. And maybe they were too lazy to make a snack because they had to hurry to a sitting job right before a meeting? I dunno.

I guess if junk food was on offer (particularly chocolate!) I'd take it whether or not I was 'starving' and even if I'd had a snack earlier that afternoon. They usually just ate a couple of M&Ms or some doritos, it wasn't like they were having a major binge or anything!

For some reason I always thought that Claudia fed her friends so they would throw away the wrappers in the garbage bins when they went out of her house, so she wouldn't have to. I mean, she might not be allowed to throw it into her own garbage can because then her mom might see it when she enters her room.

Ooh, sneaky...
So what about her junk food art? I don't remember whatever book this was in. Did she use just the wrappers or all of it? And did her parents say anything about it?

I never even thought about what she did about rubbish!
I think her parents knew that she liked junk food. In The Mystery at Claudia'sHouse, when Claudia mentioned that the cinnamon rolls for breakfast were like junk food, her dad says that the more it tastes like junk food, the more Claudia likes it. So I don't think they would've been overly shocked at her junk food art.

I think they do recieve allowances.
As for the clothing...All of their parents buy them clothes. Especially for 'back to school clothes'...I dont buy the claim that Claudia has to resort to going in to second hand shops because her parents wont give her the money. Claudia's parents (her dad mostly) are pretty proud when it comes to things like that.

Even when she was 6, Claudia had an endless supply of junk food. Six! Wow. It's gotta be Mimi, right? Sneaking her junk food? Or if it hasn't been banned yet, getting her more? I don't see how else she does it. I don't think a six year old can stick a big bag of chips under their shirt and get away with it.
