When I was in my first year of school, I tested at about grade 4 level and there was talk about me skipping a grade, but it was decided that I shouldn't because I was on the same level as my classmates emotionally and socially. I always figured that was the case with Janine - while she could easily handle the work from higher grades, she wouldn't have been able to handle the social aspects so well.

That could be quite possible. But then again Karen skipped a grade and was able to do okay. (and didn't Rosie and Charlotte skip a grade as well?)

Skipping one grade isn't nearly as traumatic as skipping multiple grades. I wonder why Janine hadn't skipped an early grade. As it was, she should have had more than enough credits to graduate early if she wanted to.

Yeah, it would have made a lot of sense for Janine to skip early, like Karen did.

Janine always struck me as someone who had trouble relating to others. I think her social / emotional levels came across as actually rather poor and the Kishi's / teachers probably thought she needed to be at high school still to become better at relating to her peers first.

They say as much in the beginning of #7, that Janine is sort of jealous of Claudia's many interests and friends.

Remember how in book #1 we learned that Janine's best friend was a "fourteen-year-old math nerd" who was going to graduate from high school in the spring? Janine was 15 and a sophomore at that time. It would have been cool if she'd skipped junior year and graduated early, too.

That friend isn't named, though, is s/he?

Nope.

Nope, never named, but for some reason I always pictured the friend as a boy. The gender of the friend was never even mentioned.

^ Or maybe she just wanted the full high school experience, so she stayed. I dunno.

In my psychology of education class, we talked about IQs. It was a year ago, so I might be wrong, but according to my prof, less than 1% of the world's population has an IQ score as high as Janine's. When you consider that, it seems even more unlikely that Janine wouldn't have skipped a grade or several. She totally should have been the Doogie Howser of Stoneybrook! It would have made those chapter twos slightly more interesting, if anything else.

I agree with this. Janine seems like she doesn't have that many friends. And in Claudia and Mean Janine, they talked about how the other sibling is everyone's favorite and Janine said that Claudia is everyone's because she's popular, etc.
