Aww, not enough space to put what I wanted as the subject. "Stuff you didn't think about until you found like-minded nutters". Or, stuff you didn't think about until you discovered this fandom. I knew about BSC fanfic for years, but I didn't start fully discussing it until I found the BSC LJ community (and subsequently these forums) about a year ago. And I have to admit, these discussions have made me think of the BSC in a more critical and thorough way. One thing that I honestly never really noticed was the "OMG Jessi's black?!" thing. Now when I reread the books, I see all the instances where Jessi herself points out her race, but before these discussions, I never really noticed it as something unusual. Or to be mocked. Clearly, my life is much better for it now that I've seen the light

I never realized what a potential hoochie Stacey is until I started posting here.

I agree with you about the Jessi's black thing, Jen. I never thought they emphasized it much til I got here and people were talking about it. I also never thought she was paranoid about people being racist.
Beyond that, I never thought of Logan as being freakishly over-bearing to MA, either. I always thought he was just very sweet, I mean even when MA would talk about him being over-bearing I was like wtf? lol.

I never thought of some of the weird things parents do in the books. Like: the Pike parents hardly spend any time with their kids. Elisabeth and Watson let an old woman raise their adopted daughter and where was this woman when Elisabeth was in need. Stuff like that this board always comes up with new things that surprise me - that's why I love it so much

ITA... it just seemed like another over-emphasised BSC description. I mean, how many times did we hear about Kristy's "uniform" and Dawn's LOOOOONG hair, so blonde it's almost white? But still, I love the Jessi's Black jokes ;D
I never thought of Mallory as such a hopeless dork - just a more "bookish" type girl who was frustrated by her parents rules. I always did wonder about her obsession with sparklies, though.
Never ever thought Kristy was a lesbian. Even now, I still don't get the lesbian vibe from her. I mean, so what if she enjoys sports and doesn't care about clothes?
Ummm... now here are some things I did think about and what glad to realise others felt the same way:
- eleven yr old babysitters, taking care of ten yr old kids
- Claudia's clothes were more often hideous than stylish or funky
- Stacey did seem to have a LOT of boyfriends for a 13 yr old (although I admit I never thought she was a sl*t!!)
- Stoneybrook parents seemed quite "absent" and indifferent. Children never discussed issues with their parents or turned to them for help even in quite serious situations.

- eleven yr old babysitters, taking care of ten yr old kids See, I always thought that was normal... I always thought it'd be like that in real life! As soon as you turned 11, you were practivally adult. Even now, when I talk to people who are saying they don't want to leave their 13 year old son and his younger brothers at home alone, I think to myself, "But... He could've been baby-sitting for two years already!". The BSC has made me delusional, clearly. I agree with not noticing the Pike parents being indifferent... They always seemed like pretty cool parents to me. And all that stuff about Elizabeth Thomas/Brewer returning back to work after Emily Michelle never occurred to me, either.

Same. Also, Logan being gay. And add Abby to the list as well! I don't get that from any of them, unless you are going by the stereotypical "Kristy likes sports -- LESBIAN. Logan is sensitive -- GAY" thing.

Ooh, I never thought about Nannie raising Emily before this board either, it never struck me as odd. I was always confused about 11 year jr. officers babysitting 10 year olds though I never realized how much Stoneybrook really does seem to rely on the BSC!

Add me to the list of people who never thought it was weird that Nannie spent so much time with Emily Michelle, but who thought it was weird that 10 year olds were being sat for by 11 year olds!

I never thought about these books in too much depth (probably a good thing!) before discussing them online and that's only when the Emily Michelle/Nannie thing occurred to me.

Know what I'm grateful to online discussion for? All the funny stuff that I would've missed, like the sexual references.

I never thought about some of the events the BSC organised for the kids being kind of illogical at times. Like in Keep Out Claudia... no one in the BSC was musical, so how the hell did they train these kids to play all these songs? Not even a few songs, but a whole musical programme... from Fiddler on the Roof of all musicals (the music from Fiddler is pretty complex)! No one was conducting them and only a few could actually play instruments (and some of them had only just started playing), most of the kids were playing mouth organs and homemade drums! Imagine loads of kids playing harmonicas at different times...
