In Haunted Masquerade, Stacey and the rest of the decorating committee decide on an Addams Family theme for the school's Mischief Night dance.
In the same book Stacey mentions she and Claudia watched Carrie and it freaked her out.

I think the Sheik of Araby is from the 20s or 30s. Stradlater or someone whistles it in The Catcher in the Rye, which takes place in the 30s.

Sheik of Araby was also covered by the Beatles. It's on Anthology 1.
Whoa, another Beatles reference.

For some odd reason, the Ghostbusters song popped in my head. Of course, I thought about the BSC, and how it was mentioned a few times during the series. Then there was Stacey & the Haunted Masquerade, when all the kids wanted to be Ghostbusters for Halloween.

Good grief, that dates the books! How many 8-year-olds of today have ever seen Ghostbusters?

Well, in the book where ghostbusters was prominently featured, it was because it had been shown a billion times on one of the tv channels that month. That's something that still could be possible, although the kids wouldn't have the awesome collection of ghostbusters toys that my brother and I had.

I think they also mentioned Gone with the Wind in the one where Dawn dates Lewis. They go to see it.

In Fright Night we get an "ugh" from Stacey regarding the movie version of The Scarlet Letter, and I assume she's referring to the Demi Moore version from '95. This book was published in '96. I'm sure she thought she was mature and sophisticated enough for the racier scenes. Abby also plays along by giving it two thumbs down, and I thought this was funny since the movie did get a lot of bad reviews.

I'm reading Abby's Un-Valentine and finally found a reason to like Abby. She watched My So-Called Life reruns. I loved that show so much.
