Even in Beverly Cleary's books, Ramona is able to walk home herself in kindergarten. That would never happen now. That just reminded me of the book "Beezus and Ramona" where it was mentioned that Ramona once got lost on a walk - she was trying to find the end of a rainbow and just kept walking and walking until finally the police picked her up and brought her home. The way Beverly Cleary wrote it made it seem like it was no big deal, and the parents didn't get in trouble.

^ Karen did that too? Ramona definitely did it - it was mentioned in either Beezus and Ramona or Ramona the Pest.

Karen's spy mystery is really unrealistic rereading it. I mean she figures out someone was stealing from the bank! She's seven and she figures out the house sitting was transferring money into his account.

Almost everything in the BSC is unrealistic. I still love it, of course, but still they led me believe that I'd have just as much freedom as they did when I turn 13...
Here's a list of a few unrealistic things in the series:
- Stacey having a job at the mall in Stacey and the Bad Girls
- Jessi taking care of Becca and Squirt for the entire weekend
- Dawn and Claudia being allowed to sail with young children in the ocean to an island only after a few sailing lessons
- the babysitters babysitting at such a young age (Dawn, age 9, Stacey, age 10, etc.)
- the age difference between the pike kids. Come on, having a kid each a year apart is unlikely. Like moms would give birth to a baby and a few months later they'd have another. Also the two-year age difference between Claire and Margo is odd while the others are a year apart from each other.

What 9 year old want take care of little kid. Was she entertaining her little brother, Jeff? While her mom was busy doing house work or maybe they're parents had a party for the adults. Did Dawn ever explain, why she start babysitting at 9? I can't see a parent just leave a 9 year old with 6 year old. (I think, that's Jeff's age, when Dawn was 9.)

^ Yeah, you're right, Dawn and Jeff are three years apart. I'd understand if a 9 year old would look after a little brother or sister for an hour or so (like Dawn babysitting Jeff as you've said) if their mom is doing chores or some big project like painting a room or planting a garden. But in MA Saves the Day, when Kristy or somebody asked Dawn how long she's been babysitting, and Dawn replied that she had been babysitting since 9. It sounds like she's been babysitting regularly since 9. Weird and unrealistic.

And I don't know she ever explains why either...

Everything about the BSC is unrealistic, but I think the time warp and everyone staying the same ages for 13 years are the most unrealistic part of all.
When I stared rereading the series awhile back, I mentally age the girls and the clints so that everything will be a little realistic everytime I read the series.
