that parents would actually hire 11 yr old girls to baby sit their kids. that MA's dad would even let her go to New York or Sea City as he is mega strict. that they never ever have a sitting job scheduled on meeting times on meeting days, pffft, i could go on forever baby, haha.

MA's dads strictness is just... a LIE after book #4. And who would hire a babysitter for an eleven year old? My parents hired babysitters for me when I was eleven years old. Also, most of the girls started babysitting at around 9 years old. WTF? The age thing is so unrealistic. They should've been 16 and 14 and having had their first job at 12, or something. It would explain a lot more things in the books (like the boyfriends and all that)

Ugh, I hated that. When Laine's talking about her job with the others, she's all "Don't you guys want actual jobs with a salary and a paycheck you can put in the bank?" Someone should have said "Um, no, because we are 13 YEARS OLD." Not only that, but what person in his (well, it could be a woman, you know!) right mind would hire a 13 year old to run a cash register? There are also things called child labor laws. One needs working papers in order to get a job, and I'm pretty sure you must be 14 to get one. Then again, I think the sitters were 13 years old for the seventh year in a row, which would make then 20.

They actually had about 27 summers... So they'd have been what, 40? Oh, man. They're old!

i definitely agree about having 11 year olds baby-sit... especially because some of the clients they baby sat for were 10 year olds. there's not that big of a difference. and just the way they all come off as so much older than they actually are. and all the trips they take and the way they get to be alone so many places. my parents, for one, would never let me ride my bike downtown alone at 13 (though downtown stoneybrook seems a little less intense than downtown cleveland.)

Concerning Laine, maybe she lied about her age when applying for the job and since she looks older than she is (so the BSC say), it would have been a convincing fib.

but woulnd't they need some ID or something before giving her a job? I really don't think you can get away with lying about your age for a job so easily.

Hmm maybe we should think about what Mr Kellner's intentions were...

^Oh, true. I can totally see Laine as one of those wild rich kids in the city who starts partying before, like, her first period. My friend's boyfriend was the same way -- she just turned 21 and he never wants to go out with her because he got all that out of his system forever ago.

^^ Yeah, I'm sure Laine had a fake ID, but unless the job was off the books, she'd still need to provide a social security number for tax purposes.
I'm overthinking this.

A fake id to get a JOB?! If that is the case, I'm disappointed in Laine. What a waste!

LOL I totally agree, that's gotta be the worst use of a fake id ever! Plus, I think it would be pretty hard to keep up the lie of being 16 or whatever all the time at your job. Like, it would be really easy to slip up and mention what school you go to or something like that.

At least around here, I don't think you COULD fake it for very long. They check things pretty thoroughly, unless it's a really creepy place to work.

Why would Laine even want a job? Just to seem mature? I mean her parents are loaded. I could see her getting a job so she can feel grown up and independent and then quitting 4 days later when she finds out they want her to work every weekend or something.
