^ I wonder what Dawn's reaction would be if that happened.

I wish I could make a video of myself saying that line. But alas, I can't -- and I'm too lazy, haha.

On other, much lighter note, I realized that both Mr. Barrett and Buddy were named Hamilton. So when Marnie makes the "ham face" does that somehow relate to either her dad or brother? So okay after rereading this, all I imagine is the ham face makes her look like a little piggy. Almost all of the descriptions of poor Marnie are droopy diapers, dirty diapers, disheveled hair, so I just thought ham face, pig - there you have it. Or perhaps she really liked eating ham and made that face for the first time when she ate it?? Who knows why this is the question that I got out of this whole book but now I want to know the answer!

I just thought ham face = hammy. She probably did it once and got a laugh from someone, so she kept doing it to try to get some positive attention.

Lol, Wiggirl13, poor Marnie really is described like that isn't she? Either that or all runny nosed and teary eyed from being allergic to Pow.
Sparklymouse, I never did think of that. Maybe Marnie just broke out into a wide grin one day, played it up and Mrs. Barrett said she was being a "ham."

I just got hold of the re-issue of this book from the library. I've skimmed it a little bit so far and didn't see any major changes, but I'll start reading it in depth later today. Has anyone else read the re-issue yet?
ETA: I didn't want to double post, so I'm just adding it here. I did read the reissue and there weren't too many changes. They did change "thongs" to "flip-flops" in the puddle walk scene. Also, when Dawn couldn't reach Mrs. Barrett after Buddy disappeared, she said, "maybe her phone is off." I had wondered how they were going to change that scenario to make more sense in today's world of constant reachability by cell phone. I think they should have instead written it to say Mrs. Barrett had forgotten to even take her cell phone with her. It would have fit right in with her being a disorganized disaster.

even though the cookout is obviously in the spring, the references to the cold and having to wear sweaters make it seem very fall-like. maybe it's because autumn is such a pretty time of year and i can't wait for the weather to get cold and the leaves to turn, but i can't help but imagine that the whole book takes place in the fall.

^You're right about this book having a Fall or cooler weather season feel. As for the picnic didn't Dawn's mom say it was 80? I haven't read this in forever so could be wrong. Maybe the morning started off cool, like "May Gray."

I've always loved that pizza mention, in fact I am heating a frozen pizza right now because I just read this one Also it was a blast from the past reading about Dawn seeing the Barretts' breakfast leftovers and the "Pop-Tart crusts stuck in a glass." I used to want to do that with my PT crusts...who knows why...

^ i liked the crusts better than the middle, so that part always irritated me. not only would it get all mixed up with whatever is left in the glass and make the glass harder to clean, it's a perfectly good waste of the best part of a poptart.

I'm all about the middle part of the Pop Tart and other related products. That's where all the gooey stuff is!

I'm all about the middle, too. I used to break the crusts off so I could eat the middle part first, but I ate the crusts rather than throwing them out (or stuffing them into a glass!). My dad hated it when we wasted food.

I ate the crusts first so I could save the best part for last!
