I wonder if Marilyn and Carolyn decided to switch places in hopes that something that drastic might finally get their parents attention. I finished re-reading the book, this thread, and also the one about the twins in general. It sounds like Mr, (Good question as to where he was) and Mrs. Arnold pretty much "saw" their daughters as one person or maybe as cute little people to show off. It is so sad to me that Mrs. Arnold really did act surprised by Mallory and the twin's talks with her. She should have had some clue. I know, I know, this is Stoneybrook, land of oblivious and indifferent parents. It just was literally twice as bad here. I wished we had gotten to read about the sitting jobs Kristy and Mary Anne had with the twins "a long time ago." Maybe we would have gotten to know the girls a little better that way. ITA that I never felt particularly attached to either girl probably because I didn't know them. It was interesting to read some early discussion about Marilyn being friends with Charlotte and Becca. All we pretty much saw was Becca and Charlotte, except for the Danielle Books and at Krushers games. I would have also enjoyed reading about Marilyn and Carolyn meeting the Pike triplets. I know the boys were two years older and boys but they maybe could have "helped" the twins in some way or at least "help" Mallory be a better friend/sitter to the girls. I do still love the moon and stars sweatshirt, too! O/T, Sparklymouse, I hope by now you found your hypercolor T. i'm surprised that the twins actually were different from each other at all, since the series tends to treat multiples exact copies of one another, maybe with the exception of byron, abby and anna (all at the end of the series). it's like this book was their way of covering their bases so that we can't accuse them of writing only unrealistic sibling relationships.

The later books excluded a lot of the charges (or at least deeper interactions with them) maybe Ann and Co did indeed think it was easier to lump the multiples together? I've said before about always hating, especially I think in MA and Miss Priss, how Mal even addresses her brothers as "the triplets" instead of by their names. As for Marilyn and Carolyn, I confess neither ever really grew much on me!

I like Carolyn a lot. She's funny when she's making the "time machine" in #60, and I like the clothes she buys in this book and her cat-themed room makeover in #30. Marilyn's okay, but she is kind of bossy and her clothes are boring. I like when she makes up Gozzie Kunka, but it's not realistic that the other kids at school wouldn't realize that Gozzie's not a real person, considering they never, ever see her.

^ I think I like Marilyn a little it more because she IS the boring one. It's not easy having a sibling that outshines you in some way, whether it's athletically, academically, socially, or whatever. I guess I feel for her, having to live in the exuberant Carolyn's shadow.

Goozie Kunka is amazing. I wish he/she was kept up for more than one book.

^ I haven't read about our friend Gozzie in forever. She was around at least a few weeks right? If so, it definitely seems odd no one wanted to meet her at SES. Also, IIRC, Vanessa in passing said something about Gozzie or maybe it was just inviting her to join the club with Marilyn. I really liked Gozzie, too, Virgo and agree she should have stuck around for a little while. I remember Jamie had two imaginary friends one named Boris and the other Roger, the same name as his Dad. I didn't mind not hearing much detail about them since (thankfully) Jamie didn't need either as much, Marilyn did, need Gozzie I mean and reading more about "them" might have made both Arnold twins stand out a bit more for me.

the name was gozzie kunka, just as silly as morbidda destiny LOL
I think Marilyn is cool for being into piano instead of Carolyn the stylish and social one being into music like that, it gives her an edge cause she could have easily been the one into science and a stereotype like Janine

Is it possible to learn pig-latin that quickly? Marilyn and Carolyn picked it up fast in this book.

Yeah, it's possible....it's not like you have to memorize and entirely new vocabulary and grammar system. You just learn two rules and how to apply them to existing English words. )

Also, IIRC, Vanessa in passing said something about Gozzie or maybe it was just inviting her to join the club with Marilyn. Vanessa asked Marilyn if her friend "Gazelle" would want to join the club, lol. I liked all the stuff Marliyn made up about Gozzie's life. She certainly had quite the imagination!

^Thanks, Candykane. I also loved how Marilyn created Gozzie but also kept her going, that definitely took lots of imagination and creativity. I was glad Marilyn didn't need Gozzie long term but it would have been fun hearing more about her. It might have also been awesome had Gozzie been a real person. I wonder if Carolyn truly believed in Gozzie. I like to think she realized Gozzie was imaginary but supported her sister anyway. I'm not sure on the other girls though they probably did wonder why they had never met Gozzie themselves. I just read the Twin sub-plot chapters of "MA and the Great Romance." All we know about Gozzie in terms of SES is that she is not in the twins' grade. I am wondering now if maybe Marilyn thought of her as younger. Haley and Vanessa would probably know someone in 5th grade than they might in K-2nd. The only time Gozzie comes close to be found out is near the end when MA has the separate bedroom idea. Marilyn wants to invite Gozzie over to play in her room and Carolyn wants to do likewise with I believe Haley. The girls get caught up in MA's room idea so Gozzie is never "invited." As I did originally post, I think Gozzie should make an appearance in one of Mal's book. Maybe she can befriend Ryan and Meaghan Mouse or be the heroine in "Rainy Days and Froggy Nights."

I wondered. I don't think I've actually heard anyone speak it. I thought their made-up language was interesting too.

This book brings back some serious nostalgia; I need to reread! I still love the ear-piercing scene and all the tricks the twins play on poor Mal, as well as the elaborate descriptions of all their toys. And when I was a kid I thought the twins' new clothes and the sitters' pierced ears were the most dibble thing ever.

^ Me, too! The mall trip in this book might actually be my favorite in the whole series. When I was younger, it made me think that going to the mall with my friends unsupervised would be the coolest thing ever!

I love this book so much. It was one of my first BSC books that I remember reading. I think it's my favorite Mallory book.
