By the time Claire's 11, maybe she will be allowed to have a blue mohawk and six piercings! Now there's a mental image. :-) It might also be a fanfic waiting to happen: Claire Pike grows up and goes punk. Hmmm....

i really want the koala bear earrings. those goody bags were so dope. I agree. But then Mal says, Boy, goody bags had certainly improved since I last got one. When we were little, didn't goody bags just have, oh, peanuts and maybe a plastic ring in them? And then I think, Mallory, you dope. You're eleven. Your eighth birthday was just three years ago.

I'm pretty sure when I was 11 I still gave out party bags at my b-day party!

^ Agree about the goody bags sounding like something I'd want - even now ;D And the koala earrings sounding adorable. I guess I'm an 8 year old at heart ;D

Just read this a couple days ago and I felt really bad for the twins. I don't think it was fair to them to be treated as clones.

yeah, it's not. do you know what else it seems weird to me? with all the expensive clothes the girls have, and two brass doll beds etc., these arnolds seemed to be watson brewer-rich to afford TWO of so much expensive stuff. it'd be so much more economical to let the girls share. i mean, if my brother had a toy that i also wanted i think my parents would have just made him share it, although, come to think of it, we both had our own game gears they seemed to have more stuff than karen brewers. dollhouses AND brass doll bed?!

My cousin has twin girls (just turned five, or will be in a couple of days...not sure the exact day of birth) and she begs people to get them duplicate presents or else they'll just fight over them.
I don't really get it either, but apparently it's not uncommon. I read a blog for someone who had twins, and they wrote a quick entry cursing "Santa" for bringing the kids different presents...complete with a great shot of the girls locked in a tug-of-war over it.
By eight, though, you'd think they'd have mellowed out enough to be able to share something like a dollhouse. The doll beds I understand - one for each girl's favorite doll - but dollhouses are the sort of thing that you play with together, or you take turns. It's not like you can play with two dollhouses "together," so...eh, I don't know. It makes sense in my head but I'm not sure how to say it.

I find the two dollhouses really strange... me and my sister aren't twins but we always played with our one dollhouse together when we were little... but the Arnolds were a bit of an odd family anyway what with Mrs Arnold over-accessorising herself and the pair of them allowing their daughters to dress the same at the age of 8 I agree about the party bags! Today when I see what goes in going-home bags now, I'm stunned as mine were so simple when I was little! Haha I know some parents who hate having to make these bags due to the theory of "Why should these kids get stuff when it's not even their birthday?" ;D

I think Mrs. Arnold is just really into "stuff" and appearances. That's how it seems with how she goes overboard with accessories, decorations, etc. I'm not sure how this explains having two of everything and dressing the girls the same but maybe it's because she thinks that "more" is better (including having more toys, etc) and that it is "cute" to dress the girls exactly the same.

Yeah, I agree, Mrs Arnold just thinks it's cute to have two matching little girls with all the frilly stuff. Also, I don't think the Arnold's would need to be rich to afford dollhouses and brass doll beds in addition to expensive clothes etc - sure, it's over the top and indulgent, but there are people who live beyond their means just to keep up appearances. Plus, this is Stoneybrook, so chances are Mr Arnold was a lawyer and bringing home a good paycheck.

^ ;D about Mr. Arnold being a lawyer. Did it ever mention what his job was? Was he ever mentioned in this book?

I liked the shopping trip with the twins also. I bet Mal was jealous of Carolyn's sparkly moon and stars sweatshirt (which I thought sounded awesome as a kid!) OMG, I thought Carolyn's moon and stars sweatshirt was awesome as a kid too! I thought I was the only one who thought that lol. The shopping trip with the twins was also my favorite part in this book, which I read over and over 5 million times in my childhood. I also wanted to get a pair of push-down socks, although I had no idea what the heck they were and still don't to this day.

^ aren't push down socks those socks that are "looser" and can be bunched down like a pair of leg warmers? They look pretty bad.
I was so desperate to find a sparkly moon and stars sweatshirt!
