I agree that Kristy never missed an opportunity to promote the club, but then complained about not having enough sitters. What did she expect to happen when they advertised all over town?
I can't see readers campaigning to get Dawn back to CT the way they did with Stacey. Stacey always seemed to be the fan favorite, Dawn, not so much.
I also didn't like the guilt trip Kristy gave Dawn. Wasn't it in the very next book that Dawn called during a meeting and Kristy started grabbing the phone and yelling that Dawn needed to come back immediately because they were overbooked?

^Not one of Kristy's finer moments. That might have been a good time to remind Logan of his once (in his first ever book, #10) of finding other boy Sitters. I still think Gordon Brown might have been a candidate.

what i think is strange is that kristy -- who can't stand dawn -- was so against her leaving. if my best friend dumped me for a stuck up snob who talked down to me, i would be thrilled to get rid of her. but i guess it shows some maturity that kristy recognizes how important dawn is to the club.

Well said Oldhickory. The only thing is until Dawn left they had never (with the exception of the BSC Agency temporary traitors) taken on new members so why were they so panicked about doing so? Although I would have preferred the original idea of the 4 girls Sitting in their immediate neighborhood. To me, that made the community more homey and the Series more relastic. I should say more of a focus on Bradford Court area. I am not a Korman fan at all, was sad to see the Kuhns replace the Barretts and even Pikes to some extent. As the Series progressed Jamie and Charlotte even became less heard from. I don't know. At the same time, this could have been time for say Tiffany Kilbourne to become a junior member?

I agree with oldhickory and zoar. I would be ecstatic if my best friend's new best friend left town! I never really thought about the hominess of Bradford Court until I began rereading recently. I thought it was neat that they took over the entire town, but I liked the small-town feel more.

That would be difficult since in some books, Tiffany's age changes from eleven to ten.

Re-reading through this thread and really agree with Alula's comments on page 4. babysittersclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=bsc&action=display&thread=3420&page=4 Dawn really did (out of no where, too) come across as downright mean and rude. I also wonder if she had kept in touch with any of her CA friends up to this point? I don't think there's ever any mention of them other than in the books where she visits CA. One "funny" (amazing--Dawn's words) catch I just made was this on page 64. (Dawn) "Maybe I should call Claudia in advance so she can hide a cake in her sock drawer or something." Mary Anne giggled. "Dawn, I'm so happy for you! You're like your old self again. "California, here I come," I screamed. ^Wait I do remember in the olden days Dawn did eat some taffy in one book. Maybe pre-all this angst she was more "tolerant" of other people's snacking choices. Edited to add the "best" scene in this book. I know we've discussed this before but it takes the "Mrs. Schafer" to a new level. Page 62. "Good Afternoon, Mrs. Ballmer speaking." (Remember this same person (or one with the same name once worked with Stacey's mom at Bellair's) "Hi! May I speak to Mrs. Schafer?" I blurted. "Who?" "Mrs...Mrs. Spier?" (the ? mark makes it sound like it is an uncertainty in Dawn's mind. Apparently Mrs. Ballmer agreed). "No, this is Mrs. Ballmer. B-A-L-L--------" "Sharon! Is Sharon Spier there, please?" "Oh. Uh, just a moment."

I read above some people having issue with Kristy's reaction. I feel like she sort of felt abandoned by Dawn like her dad.
I really hate Dawn's wishy washy and her family has got to stop that! 6 months here 6 months there - I mean you really just can't keep doing that. I'm sure Sharon knew deep down she wouldn't be coming back (thank god) so it must have been even harder.

^Wiggirl, you really are hitting the nail on the head. The wishy-washy did get old after so many times. Though as I edit this years later, I still smile to standby my original (BSC in general) preference that I am glad the girls did not age.
Why do you think Kristy felt abandoned by Dawn?

^ In Graduation Day, Kristy says that the club is like her baby and that any time someone left the club, it upset her. Maybe it reminded her of how Patrick left.

^Maybe, she felt like anytime anything about the club changed there was the (increasing) possibility for something to adversely affect the BSC.

I always just felt like Kristy was trying to fill a void in her life when patrick left and that anytime what she had created was changing or vulnerable it took her right back to when he left. Just my interpretation of her probably b/c I do relate to her in that respect.

^I definitely agree that (at least one) the reason the BSC was so important to Kristy was because it was the "family" she created. If that's true, the Dawn thing, despite Kristy not liking her that much, really does fit.

Just my interpretation of her probably b/c I do relate to her in that respect. that's actually a really interesting interpretation. even though kristy created the club and it's kind of like her baby, she's still very much a scared little girl. i can imagine what she went through is something that you don't just forget, and she probably takes it somewhat personally when someone leaves her, even though it has nothing to do with her.

GUESS WHO'S BACK AT SCHOOL? The BSC! And they're all very excited, especially Mary Anne (because she was a maid in he last book). Why does Dawn look SO DRAB on the cover? Seriously.
I'd been thinking: maybe they sent Dawn away for a bit because they wanted some California perspective. Dawn's Cali life has been written about in Dawn on the Coast and there was the California Girls Super Special... so maybe those books were popular and Scholastic thought it would be a cool idea to have a bi-coastal sitter, to get away from Stoneybrook for a bit? After all, the next 2 Dawn books are set in Cali AND there are a few Mysteries set there as well.
