I agree about Mark. I actually found him more relatable. All the guys in my junior high were just like him. From what I've read on Josh, there really aren't any real junior high guys who are as cool as Josh was. But then again, all the boys in my junior high were pretty much jerks anywayBoys are really immature at that age though. Gotta agree on that. Boys are much more like Mark than Josh at that age...

Josh wasn't that abnormally fabulous, I don't think. He was a nice guy but seemed like he would be really annoying if you were around him all the time.

If Josh was the blond guy on the cover he was hot. I've said this before but he still reminds me of Maxwell Caulfield from Grease 2. Mark did seem more relastic because he had moments of indifference along with some of being "eager to impress." Josh, came across as possibly a year or two younger than he was. I say that because he acted as though he were constantly on "Go mode." Still, I think he meant well.

zoar3, that's Mark -- Josh is the one in the red sweater.
I didn't mind this book. I liked reading about the Colour War, and adding it into the sub plot interested me (unlike some of the sub-plots that I think were dumb).
Claudia looks AWESOME on the cover!

^Josh is in red? There goes that theory. I think what I meant was "hot" Josh was on Claudia, Queen of the Seventh Grade. That is assuming Josh is wearing the blue sweater on the left.

Nope, I think that's Mark. Josh is the one in the white shirt in the middle...

Looking at the cover of Claudia, Queen of the Seventh Grade ... they do look younger than her (especially the guys!)

I'm glad that Claudia's broke up with Mark. I don't like him so I was glad when they broke up. It was weird that the school was willing to put Claudia back in eighth grade just back she was doing better. She probably should've remained in seventh grade.

Yeah, I agree it seemed ridiculous, mostly because the timing was totally off. Book 101 is published in October, Book 106 is published in March of the following year, and Book 113 (this one) is published in November of the same year. Phew. Enough said.
I know that the point of it all was to not follow time-lines as opposed to plot-lines, or whatever.

How do you know, Virgo? I agree the timing was very odd and never would have flown in the real world. It would have made more sense for Claudia to have never started 8th Grade (first time around in #10) and had to repeat 7th. But then, I know, it'd be even more obvious that the other girls never aged. Would have made for some interesting plots though. I was glad Claudia and Mark broke up, too. I always wished that Claudia had maintained contact with Will from SS#3.

^ I had a hard time believing that a bunch of students would have picked white. Orange isn't really a popular color either (although I love it!). I would have thought they would have picked green and red too. Or even yellow.

^When my high school did a color war, it was upperclassmen vs. underclassmen so that we could have one team with each of the two school colors. The classes picking their own colors was kind of weird.

Something just occurred to me....why did Claudia get to make so many of her own decisions about her education? She got to decide about returning to 8th grade in this book, and she also essentially made the decision about returning to SES from the "special" school in her portrait book. Somehow, I don't think someone with Claudia's academic difficulties should be making those calls....

^I never thought of that either, Starrynight. Claudia really was given way too much freedom, particularly with the 7th/8th Grade thing. I think, especially after she finally was doing well in school and seemed to have more of school/friend balance, that would have made the case stronger for her to remain in 7th grade (particularly for the counselor's and her parents pov).

starrynight - good point!
I don't remember kids being sent back a grade when I was in school. They just had to repeat the class or were in special education classes to make up that grade. Whatever happened to the remedial classes Claudia used to take? I don't remember which book(s) it was was in, but I remember her mentioning them at some point.
