I always thought Claudia was kind of foolish for thinking she'd been adopted. But I guess it isn't that strange since a friend of mine was absolutely CONVINCED that her brother was adopted (he was the only one in the family that was tall and thin and didn't wear glasses - lots of evidence there). And since my uncle actually went (yes, as a grown man) to the county courthouse to look up his birth certificate because he was worried that his dad wasn't his dad - the evidence there was a few people made comments that he looked different from others in the family. He believed the joke that "his dad was the mailman." So, I guess others are as dumb as Claudia. It would have been funny if she turned out being right. As for this book, I really like it because it is one of the first BSC books I read. I especially enjoy the chapters with Emily and love it when Janine gives her the balloon.

Except in The Mystery at Claudia's House, where it was blatantly obvious that Janine had a boyfriend, but apparently the idea that she's a drug dealer or a sppy is more believable. *eyeroll* Did they really think Janine was a drug dealer?! I didn't think they even existed in theory in Stoneybrook! Edit: post #100! yay!

I just think Claudia was WAY too old to be thinking she was adopted. I mean geesh just ask your parents if you're THAT concerned! This book is pretty ridiculous. I could understand one of their clients feeling how Claud did, because they are children, but a 13 year old?! Come on...

^ I agree, I can see a 7 or 9 year old thinking they're adopted and getting all wrapped up in the idea, but Claudia was way too old for that.

I guess some people are just dumb But as my uncle proves, age does not limit this. Agree that someone older than 7 or 9 should not make such an ignorant assumption but I guess people do. My uncle did the same thing as Claudia as an adult! We still laugh over that in my family (behind his back of course Come to think of it, maybe it isn't dumbness as much as an insecurity issue. I have always considered Claudia insecure and my uncle is one of the most insecure people I know. There I go relating the BSC to real life and analyzing things

Maybe Claudia just got caught up in the glamour and drama of the thought of being adopted. She's constantly looking for reasons to justify why she's so different from her family, so I do agree with aln that it could've stemmed from simply being insecure, like she just wanted a way to explain her "weirdness" and grabbed onto the first glimmer of an idea she had.

Claudia seems so jealous of Janine in this one. It's understandable but still.... She always is making the biggest assumptions. Jessi does this, too. So do all the girls but not as much. It's almost funny how she does this. I love her interaction with Emily, though. Emily sounds so cute and Claud (Janine too) is good with her.

Yeah, she did kinda pull it out of thin air didn't she? I loved her interaction with Emily though, made Claud feel better about herself.

Yes, it takes a toddler to make Claudia feel smart.

^ ;D So true. But I do see what Kylie is saying. Teaching can really give people confidence. Even normal people, so I can't imagine what it did for insecure Claudia. ;D

I just started a new job 2 months ago and I had to start training people a few weeks ago. Totally boosted my confidence and helped me to improve my performance.

I just reread and really like this one – if not just for nostalgia. It was one of the first BSC books I ever read and owned and I remember being like “I HAVE to get this” because I got all excited about finding out if Claudia really was adopted. Of course, I knew right away that she was so stupid to assume this but…. I think the thing I enjoy most about this book is Claudia’s work with Emily, who sounds precious. I love the scene with Janine and the balloon, always like reading about tutoring, and about Claudia being successful with something other than art.

^ This was among my first BSC books, too! I got the #33 - #36 boxed set. I thought before I first read it that they'd discover that Claudia was actually related to Emily Michelle.
