Is it a coincidence that both Claudia and Emily are Asian?

^Why? I don't see any hidden meaning to the two of them being Asian. Japanese does not equal Vietnamese.

Never said that, but some people still think all Asians are the same when they're clearly not

I was going through my huge bin of BSC books today when I came across this one, and thought that the cover was a horrible representation of the book. People unfamiliar with the series would assume that Emily Michelle is Claudia's little sister (which I guess might be part of the point?)
I think a better idea for a cover would have been similar to the cover of Dawn's Family Feud. The Kishi's would be sitting as a family portrait, with Claudia standing out on how different she is from the rest of the family (with her outrageous style!) while the other Kishi's looked "plain and nerdy".

^Would have made for a MUCH better story, too. This book could also have been made superior had it simply been "Middle School Dropout." I mean Claudia is given the ultimatum of either getting her grades up or being send back. She tries, fails, and is put back to 7th grade where she won't have the choice in month to go back to 8th grade. I could see her ditching school, possibly even running away from home in hopes of finding herself or a true family. As for Emily, all we know about her is for whatever reason her natural parents gave her to the orphanage. I would guess she had no family in Vietnam able to care for her. That translated into her magic arrival into Nannie's main care. Another example of how the LS series should have focused on the charges/families instead of just Karen. ETA: Now that I do love the LS books, there should have been both.

I can just picture a scene where Emily calls Claudia, "sister". And then Claudia goes... "Oh my lord! Maybe Emily Michelle actually *is* my sister!"

Another cover that would have worked better would be Claudia, well, searching for something. Like the scene where she's digging through all the papers in her parents' desk.
I always laugh at the part where she comes across an envelope full of both Janine's and her report cards and says "I put that away quickly." ;D

^Lol. Claudia also could have been holding open a family album and wondering where the pictures of her was or likewise with Janine's birth announcement in the Stoneybrook news. The caption could have been "Do the clues add up?" (Is Claudia adopted)?

That would also make sense, candykane -- reminds me of Mary Anne searching for something on a couple of her mystery covers: Attic and Music Box Secret.

Or Claudia searching in Janine's room and holding a nasty old candy making a face coming from a hiding spot

^Claudia could be fed up with Janine or mad at her for some reason and want to try and find something that isn't "perfect" (to Claud) about her older sister. Either that or the Kishis are coming closer to "catching" onto Claudia's stash so she (C) raids her sister's room for better hiding place ideas! Hey, I like this idea.

Why, thank you Now that I think about it, it doesn't sound to far fetched from the occasional BSC meeting where she finds old nasty chocolate too.
