I really enjoyed this one, I loved seeing the Pike family interaction. I do get tired of the BSC "good samaritan" activities, although I suppose it's a positive example for kiddies, much better than the stereotypical teenage apathy.
I couldn't help feeling annoyed with the Pike family toward the end, though. The cameras and filming had dominated their lives 'round the clock' for weeks and it was all for nothing. What was the point of practically ruining all the Christmas preparation, upsetting the kids and extended family members and allowing their lives to be dominated by Mr Henry and Co if they were only going to throw it all away at the last minute?
Also, if you've got a family of eight kids, it doesn't make much financial sense to turn down $10,000 - especially when you'd used up all your savings earlier in the year.
Ugh, I'm getting cynical in my old age!!! ;D

I loved this one! I didn't even mind that they turned down the money at the end - it was the principle of the thing, after all. Having a true, family Christmas that they could all enjoy was more important to them than monetary gain. Aww.

I totally love this one too! I read it every Christmas. The ghostwriter did a good job with it.

I did crack up at what the Pike kids thought $10,000 would buy. A car, a house and a butler? Sadly it wouldn't even put a dent in Mallory's college education these days.
I do love the nice Christmassy feeling of the book. Kristy being upset over not being featured more on TV amused me.

I don't even want to think about how much money it would cost to send all the kids off to college.

I always imagine Adam as sort of a dolt, so maybe they would only pay for 7 college educations.
Still, they would get very good financial aid, even though Mr. Pike makes enough money for Mrs. Pike to be a stay at home mother of eight. And for Mallory to get paid for doing what pretty much every older brother or sister I have ever known did for free. The kids' proximity in age would probably get them a nice package, but $10k is likely to only be a drop in the bucket.

Agree about the financial aid. My dad works with a guy who has 8 kids and they all went to school for practically nothing while I got nothing, even though my mom is stay at home and my dad made a bit less than the guy with 8 kids. As for the book, I also love it's Christmassy feel. I needed that this year since it just didn't feel like Christmas here in MI with no snow.

But having so many close to age would be hard to afford to put into college w/o any outside help. (It's a good thing that the Pike kids are smart though, it also makes me wonder what it is going to be like when the kids start driving.)

^Right, that's why the government is most generous with financial aid to families that are putting more than one child through college at a time. If you make $12,000 a year and have a 19-year-old and a 15-year-old triplets, you'll get less than someone making $18,000 a year with, say, 18-year-old triplets.

And don't forget they would have a 19 year old to pay for and a 17 year old high school senior.

Mallory and Vanessa could get scholarships for their writing abilities. Not sure about Nicky, Margo and Claire... I could imagine Adam and Jordan going insane at frat parties, whilst Byron is the stereotypical university student with his books, scarf and hot chocolate or coffee ;D

^ Love the predictions. ;D Was this the book where the tv crew comes to tape the family's Christmas? I only read it around Christmas time (which is way too far off - I love Christmas ;D) and can't remember anything about it.

Yes it was the one where the tv crew came to tape the Pike's Christmas. I actually love this book and have read it quite a few times. I think it may be one of my favorite BSC books. I loved the Christmasy feel to it. I always loved seeing how the Pike family interacted at Christmas.

I could imagine Adam and Jordan going insane at frat parties, whilst Byron is the stereotypical university student with his books, scarf and hot chocolate or coffee ;D Is it really an absolute expectation that parents pay for their child's college education? Over here we have a government funded scheme which almost completely removes any financial obligation from parents. I really don't think a family with eight kids would be able to afford the total cost, unless their dad was Bill Gates or something.
