^ Yeah, I'm not sure how much they are here, to be honest, but I knew plenty of average-income families whose kids took riding lessons, which lead me to believe it wasn't only an activity for privileged kids. $40 is pretty expensive, I guess. How did the Pikes afford it? Was that explained? I can't remember.

I think there was a special 6-week deal and she paid for half of it or something. The BSC members always pay for half of something, whether it's a trip to Hawaii or a neat sweater from Steven E.

I like how Karen Brewer had to pay for half of a bicycle that she needed replaced because her old one was too small, but gets a pony handed to her. Unless she paid for part of the pony. It's been awhile since I read that one.

^Yeah! IIRC they technically owned it but were really doing it so a friend wouldn't have to lose the pony? I could be remembering it wrong but I definitely recall Karen getting a pony. I think she got mad when it couldn't live in their backyard or something. Duh.
That's not too bad. I remember paying $35 for each of my private violin and viola lessons, and the Pikes could afford piano lessons for Jordan.
edit: I hate my laptop touchpad. I end up highlighting and deleting large sections of text without realizing it!

Ha, come to think of it, that's true. d**n, those parents expected their kids to earn their keep! Hmmm yeah, that logic was right up there with the Pikes' no-bedtime-no-rules-yet-no-sparkle-sweatshirt mentality.

Perhaps the Pikes just didn't want Mallory to leave the house dressed like Claudia.

Perhaps the Pikes just didn't want Mallory to leave the house dressed like Claudia. When you think about it, it was for her own good! I shudder at the mental image of Mallory dressed like Claudia..

For some reason, whenever I read the phrase "sparkle sweatshirt," a magenta sweatshirt with purple and silver sequins scattered over the front comes to mind. What I'm imagining would clash horribly with Mallory's hair, so I always wonder why she would even want it.

I think of the creations that many girls in my first grade class wore: white tshirts or sweatshirts with big flat sequins surrounded by glittery puff paint. Which made Mallory's wants and needs seem weirder to me; she wanted to dress like a first grader.

I always imagine the sparkly sweatshirt to be bright blue! Which Mallory DID fantasize about wistfully. But by the sounds of it, the Pikes simply thought Mallory was too young and were going to allow it when she turned 13 (life would be a picnic). Eh, maybe they thought she'd see sense by then.

I always pictured the sparkley sweatshirts to be pink with silver swirls and designs all over them. The kind that "shed" a bit when you walk, leaving glitter and stuff all behind you (I am ASSUMING they do this, I do not know from experience! I swear!) and I just think anything pink would clash horribly with mallory!

Mallory always seemed to blow huge amounts of money and end up being disappointed. Remember all that makeup she bought in California? I'd hold onto my cash a little tighter if I only got $1 an hour or whatever insane amount the club seemed to charge.
I mentioned this in another thread, but why'd one of the triplets get piano lessons? Somehow I doubt he had to pay for half. I don't care if he hated them, to me any lesson like that is a luxury and it is weird that 1 of 8 kids got special treatment.

ugh, that was cringey!! Honestly, to spend that kind of money on makeup is INSANE. Okay, maybe not if you're a grown woman with disposable income. But an eleven yr old kid lucky enough to win (one seventh) of the lottery?
Did he? I don't remember. Chances are, he wouldn't have got piano lessons if he didn't want them. Why would a parent single out one of their eight kids and force them to take piano lessons? They were on a tight budget, I can't imagine then forcing a reluctant child to take lessons they hated.

Yeah, in Kristy and the Missing Child, Jordan takes piano lessons. And it's mentioned in Mallory Hates Boys (and Gym) as well. Which seems kind of strange... I'd have thought that if any of the triplets were to have piano lessons, it would've been Byron.
