Aww am I the only one who didn't mind Jamie's subplot? Maybe I'll have to re-read to see if I find it as dull as you guys did, but I remember the main plot being really boring and predictable so meh. I think any plot w/ Jamie is cute...

I remember liking the Jamie subplot when I first read the book as a kid, but upon re-reading it I was bored to death. It just goes on and on and on and on! It seemed like every other chapter was somebody babysitting Jamie and watching him ride up and down the driveway a million times. In theory it's a cute idea -- little Jamie Newton learning to ride a bike -- but the way it was told was just SO boring. Plus those lame kids that ride by yelling out things like, "You can do it Jamie! Just try your best!" Come on!

In reality those kids probably wouldn't say that to a 4 year old...

^ I actually liked the subplot better than the actual story. This was never one of my favorite BSC books as a kid, but I like it now because it was one of the early ones I owned!

I do agree that the older kids being so encouraging and nice to Jamie was pretty weird and seems very unrealistic. I can't imagine any normal kids doing that.

^ What kids encourage Jamie? It's been a while since I've done anything but skim this one ;D I can see that some normal kids might have done that (I know I would have - was just rolling my eyes at myself in a home video when I was 7 saying things like that in my annoyingly shrill little voice) and I know a lot of the kids the BSC sits for were pretty nice. I can see someone like Becca and Charlotte being encouraging. Unfortunately, I know that a lot of kids wouldn't be, either. There are some real bullies and kids who like to make others feel bad that would probably be laughing at Jamie. Knew lots of that type too.

^It was random kids in the neighborhood if I remember correctly. Just some older boys riding their bikes that Jamie wanted to fit in with I guess.

^ Boys would be harder for me to picture being nice (though my boy cousins were always really nice and I did know some nice boys). It would have made more sense coming from kids the BSC sat for. I'm sure it wasn't Mel Tucker or Sean Addison, though ;D

okkay totally rereading this book right now so not all teh way through. So teh fire drill in the beginning was planned. Fire drills are always planned...unless some kid pulls the tihng but why the hell as it in the middle of an assembly?? Was reading the Mary Poppins thing and I was specifically looking for Stacey to say somethinga bout it, but she doesn't. At least not that I can tell. When theyr'e talking about a raisin in the sun and mary poppins is babyish, I didn't notice her say a thing about it... maybe i'm wrong, but just what i noticed, andi was looking for it. (does she mention something later in the book?)

^ No, I'm pretty sure that Stacey never mentions the "Mary Poppins" thing....

I reread this book yesterday for the first time in years and thought it was boring. I totally agree that the Jamie subplot was a snore. I think he's cute but I just didn't want to read about him riding his bike anymore. Too repetitive.

The Jamie subplot always made me feel kind of embarrassed 'cause I didn't learn how to ride a bike until I was nine. I didn't even have a bicycle, as opposed to a tricycle, until I was six. I was really happy when I read the newest Judy Blume, Soupy Saturdays with the Pain and the Great One, and the Great One was eight and just learning to ride a bike.
