Even though Kristy was clearly spreading herself too thin, and knew it, I felt bad for her when she bombed her retake of the science test. She said she got an even lower grade than her original test. Pretty embarrassing.
When I was a senior in high school I did a co-op job at a preschool. The kids were all 3 and 4 years old. Near the end of the school year, we had a bike safety day and all the kids got to bring their bikes to school and ride in a special zone of the parking lot. Only one of the kids (a 4 year old) could ride without training wheels. Of course, I thought about Jamie Newton when I saw her zoom past! She was good at it too. She was a little rough and tumble farm girl that spent a lot of time outside.

Recently, I've even thought of switching careers totally to become a teacher.

For some reason, this made me imagine the series turning Kristy into a Latina character (because she looks like it on the cover, haha). They don't really say each character is WHITE. They make sure to add that Claud's Japanese and Jessi is black. If they did, then how Kristy looks on the cover would have made much more sense Well, in the Saddle Club series, Carole magically becomes black over time. At some point, The Powers That Be realized that there was no racial diversity in the SC, but Carole had dark hair and it had never specifically said that she wasn't black, so then they started describing her as African-American. I guess you could say the same thing about Ms. Colman in LS.

For some reason, this made me imagine the series turning Kristy into a Latina character (because she looks like it on the cover, haha). I don't know why, but my mental image of Kristy (and Sam and Charlie) has usually had her having somewhat darker skin, hair and eyes, kinda like she could be wholly or part Hispanic or Native American or something. I don't know why I picture the three of them like that, and not David Michael. Maybe I subconsciously want to believe the David-Michael-has-a-different-father theory???

^ Maybe you were subconsciously persuaded by the original cover of this book and Kristy's appearance on it? haha

David Michael and Sam and are both described as having dark, curly hair. Don't remember about Charlie.

This always confused me so much. I have a very clear memory of looking at a copy of the second (I think) Saddle Club book and seeing Carole on the cover. She had dark curly hair, but she was very clearly white.

This is the most boring book. The plot was boring. Beginning of the book, Kristy candidate for President. end of the book, she step out of the candidate. Jamie is a brat in this book. He wasn't ready ride a two wheeler. First time, he rode his bike with training wheels. He had Kristy & Claudia holding both sides of the bike. few chapters alter, he's trying ride the bike without training wheels, with Dawn or one of the other sitters. Every leave, branch, grass, or anything else on the ground had be move before he continue. I was 3 or 4. when I was riding a bike with training wheels Until I was 6 or 7. I was riding two wheeler. Don't remember, if we celebrate or not. Now, I can't ride a bike. Because of my hip fusion. It's one of the fun things, I loved to do, when I was a kid. I can't even ride a special bikes for handicapped people. I got the old cover of this book with the free bookmarker of Kristy Thomas. (I bought this at the library.)

I don't remember how old I was when I learned how to ride without training wheels. I do remember my mom driving through my bff at the time's neighborhood and seeing her riding around with her dad without training wheels. We went home and I frantically tried learning without the wheels that same day. Peer pressure gets you at any age, I guess. The thing I will always, always associate with this book is the play A Raisin in the Sun. WHY CAN'T THEY DO AN AWESOME PLAY LIKE THAT, HUH?! OMG, imagine if Starring the BSC was about that.

once in middle school we had a mock vote, and immediately before we voted each candidate got to make a speech. this kid kevin announced then after campaigning the whole time that he didn't want to be mayor and don't vote for him. i remember the teacher was pissed and said that he wouldn't take kevin's name off the ballots, because people just don't get to quit. even though dropping an activity was the right thing for kristy, i would have liked to see a teacher tell her that quitting is not a realistic solution to problems, and not to make such big decisions (the decision to run and the decision to drop out) without more thought.

^ I agree with you but I am somehow reminded of the US Presidential Election (which is so annoying to hear about all the time in the media) and aren't the majority of the candidates dropping out (or have dropped out?) Based on your argument, oldhickory, they aren't being very good role-models

i wasn't implying that people who drop out of things are bad role models. just that people should put more thought into their actions. running for office isn't something to be taken lightly and kristy's attitude was that she was doing the school a favor. i think my teacher was right telling the kid that he once he agreed to run, he was expected to accept the responsibility and consequences should he win. running for president takes a huge commitment so even the guys who have dropped out weren't going around doing things half-assed. kristy and my classmate on the other hand did.

^I don't really agree with that in a school setting. The class officers are stuck working with each other, and if someone gets voted in who doesn't want to be there then that's extra work piled onto the others. If they got voted in and then decided it was too much work and wanted to bail then I agree that they should have to suck it up and deal. But I think it's in the best interest of everyone to get rid of the people who aren't serious before a decision is made.

Based on your argument, oldhickory, they aren't being very good role-models They drop out once it becomes clear that they won't get enough delegates to get the nomination. It's not like someone gets, say, the Republican nomination and then says "screw it."

Okay, I found something sweet about this one, and it's at the beginning. I actually liked the Emily moment where she "directed" Kristy on how to make her a peanut butter muffin. For once, Emily was more of her own person sort of like Sari when she played Ring around the Rosie. The rest of this, I fully admit, top quickly skimming and not needing to read deeper. I have to admit even "MA + 2 Many Babies," was better. If that's not scary, I don't know what is!
