^ I remember reading it in either 8th or 9th. I didn't care for it at all. I don't remember the reference in this one. Who was reading it?

They mention Mary Anne reading it while babysitting, and then later Claudia has a dream about trying to catch Lynn from running off a cliff and Stacey says something like "Sounds like Holden Caulfield, when he imagines himself catching all those kids in the field". I really loved that book, I always cry towards the end cause Holden and Phoebe remind me so much of my older brother and I when we were younger.

I love Catcher in the Rye...and Salinger's other works as well.

It's been a while since I've read Catcher, but I love JD Salinger. I've been trying to read everything he ever wrote, I still need one more "Glass Family" story, which was only printed in The New Yorker. I really love Franny and Zooey right now. I think it's easier to identify with the characters now that I'm a little older.
We never read any of them in school though. I'm not that upset, because we read a ton of books. As for them reading it in school -- eighth grade seems like a good place to put it in the curriculum. It's marketed towards confused adolescents.

Cpennylane, i have all of his stories on my computer. There's a website with everything he ever published on it... I'll try to find it for you. Edit: www.freeweb.hu/tchl/salinger

I didn't read "Catcher and the Rye" until my sophomore year in high school. They didn't want us reading it until we are older in my school district.

Ooh, I loved reading Catcher in the Rye. We had to read it over the summer, before my junior year (our teachers give us a list of books and we have to read two of them over the summer and do a book report, but all we have to do is pick a selection of questions to answer about the book from a packet our teacher gives us so it's not that bad

Hehe, see all you guys are talking about Catcher in the Rye now That was an awesome book, I had to read it in grade 12, and it was really good. BUT, what I came here to say was that Claudia was absolutely INTOLERABLE! I'm surprised Peaches didn't tell her right where to go! Geez, I hate how the BSC ALWAYS think they know more than the actual parents! Have you had kids?! NO! lol. I didn't read this whole thread but I did notice some people talking about the subplots. What were they, again? I can't even remember, its been a while since I read this one.

I think the subplot was where the Arnold girls scared themselves with the horror movies and Kristy (I think) cured them of it by helping them film their own horror movie with special effects. I haven't read it for a while, though, so might be wrong. That subplot sounds like fun now (even though I usually don't care much for it ;D) so I'll have to put this on my reread list. I love the main plot about Lynn's birth, anyway. ;D

^ My cousins and I tried "special effects" once and it turned out pretty funny. ;D Didn't do a scary movie but tried some "stunts" ;D

Haha, sounds fun! I don't remember this, but my sister, with her memory like an elephant, told me that one time I was watching her while my parents were gone somewhere and I said, 'I should get a knife, cover it with ketchup and put ketchup on you and you lie on the floor and don't move when Mom and Dad come home' I can't remember this at all! Needless to say, we didn't do it! Geez, I can only imagine Mom's and Dad's reaction to that one...
