Only up to Chapter 12 - can definitely see where it's going... ugh.
Possibly the worst book of the series. Can't believe how stupid Jessi was, being surprised that Derek didn't wear glasses or talk science-y like his television character. Ugh who knows. Maybe the ending kicks ass.

No, not the worst of the series! Pretty bad, though. But I swear there must be worst. I'll get back to you on that one...

aw I thought this book was okay. I liked Jessi's eventual relationship with Derek and his little brother (can't remember his name) and I loved how Becca was sooo in love with his co-star!

As usual, in true BSC winning-streak form, Jessi got through the Swan Lake audition and kicked some ass...
Not to mention the BSC stepping in and turning Derek's life around.

The BSC sure was a naive bunch, weren't they? It took the whole book for Jessi to figure out nobody was bullying Derek and that he was really the superbrat. Actually, he told her, didn't he? Add that to the Gozzie Kunka person one of the Arnold twins made up and the BSC had no investigative skills at all. It's amazing they solved so many mysteries when they couldn't even figure out what kids did/didn't go to a small school that so many of their siblings went to.

^ not to mention that the prospect of someone shoplifting never even occured to them.
Ugh, that was so stupid. Nicky Pike was in Derek's class, FFS! Didn't Mallory ever ask her brother about this "John" kid? There was one occasion where Nicky told them that Derek threw food all over someone, but Jessi just assumed he was retaliating against "John's" bullying.

Ah, the amazing BSC... they can solve embezzlement schemes and counterfeit money, but when it comes to kids, what do they know? Ironic, really

To be fair, Derek was only retaliating to bullying he got at first. Then it just all went away, apparently. What killed me was the BSC throwing a goodbye party for Derek. First of all, he'd only been there for a few weeks and I don't think half the BSC even met him. So how is it their job to have this party with about 30 kids? And most of said kids probably don't know the BSC, but they're supposed to go to some mansion across town, watched by strangers in bathrobes? And have their noses rubbed into the fact that Derek's leaving again to film a movie with invitations that have televisions on them? I know they were supposed to be friends now, but I still think it was a risky idea.
Every Jessi book seems to involve her being in some performance or other. I'm just glad they didn't cast an eleven year old as the star like I was afraid was going to happen.
Also, the show didn't sound very funny to me. And he doesn't look very model-y on the cover. Plus, Jessi's about a foot taller than the one-year-younger triplets. Guess it's those long, long, long legs.

Yeah, that was rather mysterious ... the issue of Derek being bullied seemed to simply disappear and Derek became the sole perpetrator. And that long neck with an adams apple. Seriously, Jessi looks about 30 on this cover.

I love how Becca has a crush on the black character, just like how Jessi always managed to find a black boy to have a crush on during the many vacations of her sixth-grade year. IIRC, there was also a dance that she went to with, like, the only other black kid at school, obviously because she liked him so much and they had such great chemistry. Say what you will about the Ramsey girls, but they were no race traitors!

Seriously, Jessi looks about 30 on this cover. This is one of the covers where the painting is changed a little bit in the new-cover version. Jessi is changed in it. She still looks kind of horrible and less like an actual human being than she did on the original cover, but she does look considerably younger on the updated version.

They always looked huge on the covers. I thought Kristy was supposed to be tiny, 5' at most, and she always towered over the kids. Jessi was a rather bulky looking ballerina sometimes.

Wow... bringing this thread back from the dead... it took me forever to find this. I was beginning to think there wasn't a thread for this book! ;D
^Word on the cover!! Jessi is TALL. Derek and the Pike triplets are half her size, and they're only what... like a year younger than her?
^^...and Jessi does seem to have an awfully lot of dancing stories!! In the Jessi books, there always seems to be some sort of dancing subplot. I felt like I read this story before, even though I actually haven't.
It's funny how the BSC always jumps at the chance to throw parties for the kids. Although it was kind of odd that they decide to throw this party outside in their bathrobes...

I loved the breakfast party and thought the bathrobes were funny - a good way to show the kids that it was okay to be silly and have fun instead of being "too cool". I didn't mind this book too much but it wasn't great. I kind of like the dance subplots and really enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey and their supportiveness. Also liked Becca's crush on Lamont and how all of the kids - and sitters - were so star struck. Reminded me of Jessi in CA Girls. I thought the chapter with the Pikes where Mal was trying to talk so - I'm not sure exactly what - was really funny. I felt for Derek, though, because he just wanted to be a normal kid. Fitting in is hard enough as it is. The triplets, as usual, were real bullies. But I'm glad that this wasn't the first book I read about Derek because I don't think I would like him as much if it had been. I have to admit that even though I read this book for the first time as an adult, I didn't catch on for about a chapter that John was really Derek. I can't believe the sitters didn't catch on quicker, though. But I think Jessi might have really known deep down and I think Mal knew but wasn't sure exactly how to come right out and say it. The only one that really seemed completely clueless until the end was Claudia, but that shouldn't surprise me.... Anyway, I didn't hate it or dislike it - mostly because of the party, subplots, and fact that I already like Derek and Todd and enjoyed reading the book that introduced them.

Haha, I didn't realise Derek was John either! I kept thinking, Derek isn't a superbrat!
