^That is very true and especially since Derek had lived in Stoneybrook full time. We know (and love )that Stoneybrook has no true sense of time. The book doesn't say when the Masterses moved to LA just that Derek did re-join his third grade class. The only consistent friend was Nicky. What was sad about that (to me) was we never got to really read about the two of them hanging out. Becca is obsessed with Lamont, another character on Derek's show. Karen wants to meet Derek so he can make her a TV star. Jessi, initially didn't seem to realize she was sitting for Derek, a real person. I know this was an instance where she did act her age but it bothered me when she said to Derek's face that she (Jessi) would have to make a list of things Waldo is about and is into and those that Derek are. The only other thing I can remember is when Derek first shows up at SES, some of the girls in his class seem to be hyper about his being there and wanting his attention, come to think of it his teacher Mr. Rossi, I believe was worse.

I think Derek was a very likeable character. I wish he'd come back to Stoneybrook, but if he did, I haven't read any books when it happened, although he did make an appearance in "California Girls". I do remember guessing the ending before Derek admitted to it, but whatever. But I really liked the friendship dynamic between Jessi and Derek. There are certain character dynamics between sitters and clients in this series, depending on how much they like the sitter and how much the sitter likes them. I think that's one of the strengths of the series that makes it worth reading after childhood. A really good example of this is the relationship between Stacey and Charlotte, although it's not the most interesting. Several sitters have a "favourite client"...check it out on Wikipedia...although I don't buy all of them. I mean, it mentions Karen as one of Kristy's favourites, but none of her other family members...although it DOES mention Jackie Rodowsky there as well, and I'm not sure if I buy that. Maybe - I think Kristy is better at handling those jobs. But then again, Stacey's favourite being Charlotte is legit. Sorry, off-track, but seriously, read this and see who the sitters' favourite clients are meant to be: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Baby-sitters_Club

He was also in Kristy and the Mystery Train, a book I should read for the Greenbrook pool scenes as it is hot here.

I actually liked this book. Even though Jessi talks about dancing a lot, I like it because I always wanted to be a ballerina. Of course, I never took one ballet class, lol. So I don't mind it, even if it's unrealistic that someone her age would be so advanced. It's just part of the fun of the series. I also liked Derek even though he kind of bullied other kids and lied about it. That kind of felt weird though considering how he was written in other scenes. I don't think it's totally unrealistic that he was picked on by the other boys. They were probably jealous of all the attention he was getting from the other girls. I also can see why Jessi didn't get that he made John up since he seemed so put out every time she sat for him. For a while I suspected he was just acting and was secretly a bully...so I'm glad that didn't happen.
I also liked the breakfast party, it was cute. And I can see why they didn't include pancakes, they can be tricky and it's not a "grab and go" sort of food like the others.

One of the more boring ones! Jessi somehow simultaneously manages to sound exactly as immaturely as I would expect an actual 11 year old to sound, and wise beyond her years in the typical BSC estimation of the junior sitters.
In a surprise to absolutely nobody, she lands yet another coveted ballet role! It is a shame Jessi was written in such a one-dimensional way. Another pet peeve of mine is the incessant transliteration Of Mme Noelle’s words. We get it! She has a foreign French accent! Stop writing ‘donce’! Between this and Claudia’s spelling, it’s amazing I didn’t grow up to be illiterate.
I did love how Becca kept pronouncing it ‘L.P.’ Instead of L.A. I thought that was cute and very believable.
More snark, sorry: surely anybody would know that kids would prefer chocolate donuts to coconut ones? Surely a professional Babysitter like Claudia would know that! Also it seems quite an expensive move for her to buy buying donuts for all the kids from a donut shop!
Listening to The The Baby-Sitters Club Club podcast episode on this one has meant I can never think of the title any other way except ‘Jessi and the superb rat’ !

I'm looking through a couple of my Jessi books in French (well, I guess they're "Jessie" books) because I'm giving a presentation about ballet in my French class tomorrow. We can choose any topic, so I thought I'd choose the one hobby of mine where all the technical terminology is already in French. But I thought I'd look in the books for a few things that aren't specialized ballet vocabulary but would be good to know in French. Like I don't want to wind up talking about putting my hair in baked goods instead of in a bun because Google Translate isn't perfect.
Anyway, I was very much amused that the name of Derek's character on the show, instead of Waldo, is Guillaume... because that's also Watson Brewer's name in the Québec editions. Derek Masters himself is named Didier Morin.
And now I'm off to read about ballet stuff on French Wikipedia...

What a stupid book.
Derek filled her head with nonsense of becoming a model at 11!
Jessi has the bright idea of inviting his class to his party when she knows no one likes him. She's such an idiot in this book.
Derek should be used in getting attention after all he is a celebrity.

Jessi got herself a whole new skin tone. Derek is bent over like he wants to be spanked by a triplet. All three triplets look like tools, so at least that is consistent from country to country.

^ Agreed about Jessi having a different skin tone. If Jessi wasn't in the title, I would've thought that was Kristy.
