^ Thanks. I'll have to check it out. Sounds like Stacey possibly has a lot in common with Lindsay Lohan's character. Does the character in the movie join? I was glad Stacey wasn't "too cool" and liked how the BSC supported her, especially when Kristy was cheering at the competition in a "sporting-event-like" fashion. ;D

Mean Girls is a drama/comedy based on how various high school cliques operate and the effects that they have on teenage girls. Although it approaches these issues in a light hearted (and often very funny!) way, it's also dark and different from the average teen flick. I'd definitely recommend it. In similarity to this book, the central character, Cady is a 'maths whiz' like Stacey and is asked to join the Mathletes, but unlike the BSC who encourage Stacey, Cady's group bluntly tell her that joining would be "social suicide." ;D EDIT - Oops didn't realise this had already been answered! But yes her character does join, then gets caught up in this clique lifestyle and pretends to be bad at maths to get this guy she likes to go out with her (and when he finds this out, he tells her that's stupid). But she does go to the mathletes final (I won't tell you the outcome though, you should watch it ). Also one of the cliques in Mean Girls strongly reminds me of the Stacey's NYC clique...

I have to agree with everyone who recommends Mean Girls - it's an awesome movie!

And the head of the Mathletes is this kid named Kevin G. (I don't know how to spell his whole last name) who is also a DJ according to his business card. Not to mention a badass MC lol.

Just finished re-reading this book and was glad to see that Stacey's selfishness and willingness to screw over people that are depending on her are still intact.
She was more than happy to switch babysitting jobs for dates with Robert, and now she's willing to let the Mathletes down for a concert. Granted, she's trying to please her dad, but really!

^Seriously. Even Cady Heron sucked it up and was ready to miss the Spring Fling. (No, I will never not think of this book without comparing it to Mean Girls again, why do you ask?)
Was anyone else kind of grossed out by Stacey's "lobster burps"? Eww.

I just read this one for only the second time, and I enjoyed it much more than I did the first time around. I did skim the math problems for the most part, but I liked the other stuff. I even liked the family interactions with the McGills.

I just read this one! I liked it a lot. At first I was like "oh, I don't know if I'm going to bother with this. It's just going to be about Stacey's problem with nerds, told by peter l" ... but then I started reading and it was pretty good. I liked the lack of Baby-sitting, until the Pikes showed up and the weird math fair thing (what was that?). This book would have been better, IMO, if they had left it about the Mathletes, how STacey fits in with them, and how Claudia handled taking over the tutoring, and Stacey's lack of respect towards Claudia and the friend issue along with Stacey's dad being a jerk. The addition of the math fair with all the kids being all "yay math" was just weird.
I wish Stacey would stand up to her father.
I liked the math problems too. I got them all right away except for the last one. (I know! I am way over the age that these books should be read so it shoudl have been easy. Well, that mirror image thing tricked me)
Why did Mr McGill want to drive all over Manhattan?

A bunch of kids suddenly being excited about math is just unnatural. One or two I can see, but enough to organize a math fair? Unlikely.
The entire storyline with Mr. McGill's car is just an advertisement for the MTA. "We might suck, but driving sucks more!" Actually, I love the public transportation in the city. But there are times I would like to strangle the subway as a whole.

I am torn about the subway. I like that there are so many stops and it runs 24 hours a day, but the trains are pretty infrequent. If you're taking the G or something you might be standing there for like half an hour, longer at night. Here, there aren't very stops and you might have to take a bus from the metro and the metro closes around 12.30 and opens around 5.30. BUT the trains are every two-and-half minutes or so.

LOL, for me, waiting is nearly always preferable to dropping money for cab fare. Once, when I was in DC, I had to take the metro to an art store to buy a piece of foam core for a project. After I bought it, I realized I couldn't carry it back from the metro stop, and I swear I felt literal pain paying the $6.50 more than metro fare the cab cost

Yeah, taking the subway from midnight until about 5AM blows. Half the time, you get rerouted anyway because that's when they work on the lines. Thankfully, I've never gotten rerouted when I was alone, because I'm only familiar with three or four lines, but you suddenly toss me on the 7 train? Panic time. Plus, yeah, you have to wait forever.
The metro in DC is really nice, though when you get there at 4AM and there's nothing open, so you can't just chill in a Starbucks until the metro opens, that's annoying. But the metro itself is nice, it even has the light-up boards telling you how long until the next train.
Cabs... I feel like my bank account is draining when I use them. It never bothered me when I was a kid, but now when I read the NYC books, I'm like "Stacey! How in the world do you use cabs so much? On baby-sitting salary!" I've seen 13 year olds on the subway without their parents before.

the seven is so easy! it just goes straight across.
they have light up boards in new york now in some stations. the L has them.
i never ever take cabs in nyc. i do here, but only gypsy cabs. and then i have a set price and if the driver doesn't like what I'm offering I just wait for the next car, so i never spend more than I want to.
