Unfortunately I don't think it gets much better, although it's not quite as bad as Jessi's Wish.

I haven't read this book in a long time, but I remember how Jessi becomes an "expert" in sign language. How is that possible in only a short while? And yeah, I remembered it being boring. The only Jessi book I liked was Jessi Ramsey, Pet-Sitter. I liked the in-fighting.

Yeah, after just a few lessons with Mrs Braddock, she's ready to almost have entire conversations with Matt.
Oh and of course, she's given the lead in the ballet... does the token BSC 'good samaritan' act and totally kicks ass at being black, we're reminded of her terrible condition every few pages in this one. Jessi can relate to any disadvantage Matt faces due to his disability - after all, look at her cocoa ( dark cocoa!) colored skin.
And, true to form, she looks about 30 on the cover. Matt is described as a 'very special child'... is that entirely PC?

The book's timeframe woulda had to be a couple of months, though, wouldn't it? I'm not really sure how long it takes to put together a ballet recital, but it would be more than a couple of weeks, right? That's make more snese in how she learnt so much sign language

I have to ask... She says she's good at languages, and could practically speak Spanish fluently after a holiday in Mexico. Is learning an oral language the same as learning a sign language? Does the fact she's good at picking up languages automatically translate to sign language as well?

I always thought it was SO unrealistic how like, everyone in Stoneybrook knows enough sign language to communicate with Matt Braddock.

^ me too, it was like, oh, this is Matt, he's deaf so you'll have to sign to him. Uhm, this is the sign for hello *waves* you can figure everything else out, right kids?
And the next day everyone knows sign language...

Yeah, like everytime there is a Krushers practice or game, Kristy mentions that Matt is deaf and then says that all the kids have learned enough sign language to be able to communicate with him pretty well. WTF? How are all these 7 year olds learning sign language just from being on a baseball team with him?

Well kids pick up language pretty quickly, but I'd guess they only learned relevant signs. Probably only his closest friends know more than the most basic stuff.
I think Jessi being fluent (in sign language and spanish) so fast was dumb though. Even if she was good at picking up languages...fluent in Spanish in a week? Whatever.
I remember in around middle school, kids would learn alphabet spelling so they could 'talk' during class. It was kinda lame. It must have taken forever just to get out a sentence.

I don't think the Krushers knew sign language *that* well. I mean, the ones who were friends with Matt knew a bit, but I remember there was a time when Nicky signed "swim! swim!" to Matt when he should've signed "run! run!". So, you know, they weren't perfect at it.

I always thought it was SO unrealistic how like, everyone in Stoneybrook knows enough sign language to communicate with Matt Braddock. Oh but it's just SO politically correct to have the deaf kid interacting with all the kids in the neighborhood with barely a mention of the fact he can't hear. Doesn't matter that the entire situation makes no sense at all

They overcome that in later books by having Matt learn how to lipread!
