I've heard "jerk" used both ways but usually to mean rude. I have heard it the other way but not very much. Maybe it's another BSC-created word. ;D

it always confuses me the way they use the term "jerk" in this book. i've always known it to mean somebody who acts obnoxious and rude, but in BSC land it seems to mean "loser". like, cokie says she wanted to make mary anne and them look like jerks in front of logan. it never made sense to me. yeah, it's like they substitute "idiot" for "jerk" - I have heard it used both ways, although maybe I've only heard it used that way in BSC books and so that's what I'm thinking of!

Agh I hate it when Kristy calls Watson 'jerky.' She does it a lot in Kristy and the Walking Disaster even though she likes him a lot in that one.

^ I don't like it that she calls him that because I don't think he is but I can't fault her for using the word because I use it that way all the time. ;D

^ yeah, the word doesn't bother me, it sounds like something a 13 yr old would say. Also, they can't get much ruder than that in BSC books. Speaking of which, I found the word CRAP in a SVH book last night and I was shocked

Heh. I was totally shocked when d**n and hell started popping up in the California Diaries books.
I love this one, it's one of my favourite Mary Anne books. I loved it when they went to go look for spell books in the library. Is this the one where Mal starts explaining how to use card catalouges and Mary Anne gets all huffy about it because she knows how to use them too? Haha. I also loved the big showdown at the end, though picturing it in my mind, it seems like it would've been a bit campy. Still. They were in a graveyard at midnight on Halloween with a full moon. When I read this as a child, that scenario was, like, the scariest thing ever! ;D

Heh. I was totally shocked when d**n and hell started popping up in the California Diaries books. They did? OMG I can't remember that! ;D Didn't the word "sucks" get used in one of the later BSC books?!

^ Victoria uses it - I think in MA and the Playground Fight. It was kind of funny how she said it, from what I remember. I said it for the first time the same way (mom was not happy ;D) - like I was "testing" it after hearing older kids use it.

Haha I remember when I was little and my older brother and sister started saying 'sucks' so I wrote it in a story for school! Ended up in trouble for that, but I tried to argue my point saying that it was a story about my brother and sister, which it was ;D

I'm sure that's how it usually starts ;D I think I'd just be surprised to see it in a BSC book. It was like seeing "B*TCH" in the final Harry Potter book.

^ I would be a lot more surprised to find the word from Harry Potter. It's probably just in my mind but that one is a lot worse to me than "sucks". Really, it's probably not but to me it is. As for this book, I think my favorite part of the Pike chapter with the bird is how Margo suddenly just gets brave and ends up practically attacking it (gets in a bossy mood, as it was described ;D) This whole scene makes me laugh becuase it reminds me of a story about my mom's cousin's husband who totally freaked out when there was a bat loose in his house. He got on the couch under a blanket and was screaming at the top of his lungs and then he actually called 911!!! ;D Needless to say, 911 was not happy.... ;D

^ I agree with you; seeing the "B" word in the BSC would have been more shocking, but I'm surprised none of them called each other that word during a fight. Most normal 13 year olds would, but the BSC is far from normal, as we've well established!

I totally agree that seeing the "B" word in the BSC would've been absolutely amazing. I think I literally would've done a double take. But I'm glad it wasn't included, parents complained about this series enough without adding swearing to the mix

^ I'm glad it wasn't used, too. I'm strange maybe but for some reason, I don't like reading swear words (not that I don't use enough of them but I try not to. ;D)
