I'm also thinking population. Perhaps when it was released, Florida didn't have as high a population as later.

Personal space, Mr. Zizmore! I thought Dawn had a full salad in her locker at first glance. I think it's a cosmetic bag? Titles: Claudia and the cheater Claudia and the unjust accusation (Did Janine come up with this?)

Shawna looks exactly like Dawn. You would think Dawn is robbing her friend's locker if you didn't know better.

I thought Shawna was Dawn for some reason. I'm not sure why though. I know on the original cover, it showed Claudia, Shawna and Mr. Zizmore but I didn't mistake Shawna for another character. Maybe it's because they were in a classroom instead of a hallway.

That’s Shawna at the locker? I’m just going to keep saying that it’s Dawn.

This is another one I re read a lot. It might have been my favorite Claudia book back then (now, so far, it's Sad Goodbye).
I still like it, but some things really stood out to me this re read. I think they've all been pointed out in this thread, but I still have to list them...
1. What Mr. Zorzi did was totally unprofessional. I'm not sure what the procedure to deal with cheating in grade school is, but this is not it. He can't assume Claudia cheated without proof. I feel like it'd have to be taken to the principal and sorted out, not "I know your grades are bad, so you did it." Messed. Up. This whole experience might discourage Claud from trying so hard in school. I know it would hand discouraged me.
2. I still don't understand why Shawna would copy from Claudia. Maybe she figured she'd end up with a C and it wouldn't be as suspicious? Idk.
3. Her parents weren't totally convinced she didn't cheat. Can't imagine how much that would hurt. Mary Anne, too (wtf Mary Anne. I think starting in #30 she was becoming a least favorite. Which sucks, because I love her in the very early books). No wonder she has self-esteem issues.
4. What were they trying to accomplish with breaking into Shawna's locker? If they got evidence (which they did), they'd have to say where they got it. This is even pointed out. It's pretty exciting for the BSC, but still.
5. How is this a mystery?
6. Triplet subplot was so dumb. I have no idea why they didn't tell the truth to begin with. None of them look particularly bad in that situation.
All this being said, I still really like this one. It's just a weird one for me where I find a ton of flaws but it's still an enjoyable read. Janine is great in this and I think is what carries the book. I can't believe I didn't really like her early on. She's a pretty great big sister. What is Claudia whining about?
Also, the outfits in this one are pretty great. I remember the Ms. Frizzle one being super outrageous, but it actually sounds cute.

This whole experience might discourage Claud from trying so hard in school. I know it would hand discouraged me. I was accused of cheating once and that's the effect it had on me. We were turning in homework before a test, but the teacher started handing out tests before I could get my homework out of my bag, so I just left it there. I specifically did it that way so I wouldn't have my homework out during the test. Then I turned them both in together and the teacher asked me if I kept my homework on purpose to cheat on the test. I still remember how ashamed I felt even though I didn't cheat. I was a good student so I think she believed me, but just knowing that she wondered that about me made me really embarrassed to be around her.

I accidentally took a math test home with me instead of turning it in. We had a substitute teacher that day. I had a brain fart and put it in my folder when the bell rang instead of on the teacher's desk. The next day, real teacher's back, handing out the graded tests, none for me. I don't remember the exact conversation, but he had me stop in during my study hall to see if we could track it down or have me re-take it. At which point I opened my folder and went "um, is this it?" He took it, and I got 100%. I didn't cheat, and he didn't think I did, but 100% is a bit suspicious. Lol.

LOL good observation about Shawna.
Mary Anne's comment was a bit of an unthinking lowblow but I think it very much was unthinking but well-meaning and OTOH with Mary Anne being I think pretty both gifted and studious I can understand her being more and more disliking of, disapproving of Claudia's general laziness in school (and the notebook), think it's really not good and is a flaw of her and she might otherwise be flawed. It was well-meaning though insensitive, I can see her thinking that if she did confessing admitting and getting that over with would be better for her.

Mary Anne was meant to be the sensitive one but I've started disliking her since book 30. She's my least favourite. I couldn't believe it when she said she thought Claudia might have cheated.
Claudia didn't owe her anything. I don't think MA ever apologised either.

Her sensitivity changed through the series. It used to mean that she was thoughtful and a good listener, but later it was weaponized sensitivity and people had to tiptoe to avoid upsetting her.
