Mary Anne and the Great Romance was one of my favorite books. My favorite scenes include:
1) When Richard, Dawn, and Mary Anne planned Sharon's surprise birthday party.
2) Sharon's surprise birthday party at the restaurant when Richard and Sharon announced they were getting married.
3) The note Mary Anne sent to Kristy.
4) When Marilyn told Mary Anne about her fake friend, Gozzie Kunka.
5) The descriptions of Marilyn and Carolyn's new bedrooms.
6) When Richard gave Mary Anne Alma's necklace.
7) The wedding ceremony.

^ All of those are my favourite scenes, every single one. The only one you left out was the drama between Dawn and Mary Anne after MA found out they are moving. I mean, I felt bad for her but I'd be lying if I said Schafer-Spier drama did not entertain me LOL I did think Dawn was insensitive in the following book about that though. I understood why Mary Anne was upset but thought Dawn had no empathy about that particular change

I have no idea how Marilyn came up with the name Gozzie Kunka, lol. Kids do come up with quite strange names.
I remember when I was five or six, I had this imaginary friend. I named him Caldro. I don't know how on earth I came up with that name.

Maybe she heard someone say "gauzy" and spelled it her way? I like Caldro because "caldo" means soup in Spanish

I love the name so much however she came up with it, sounds like something she misheard as a baby and it stuck with her It's still a running joke with me

Am I making it up or did MA ask Kristy (to ask Charlie) to get Sharon a SHS charm? That is the gift MA gives Sharon at her birthday dinner. I know it was because Richard couldn't afford a high school ring for Sharon. I just reread this book--decided if I had read about Susan #32, I'd go back and the two wedding books. I'm sort of rereading in order but admit the books now mean so much more to me reading by season, need, or if we talk about something on here in real life that reminds me of a particular story. Anyway, I still think Richard and Sharon should have had their more private family wedding since it sounded like that was what they wanted. Maybe their could have been some type of bigger celebration party shortly afterward, I'm thinking of the Schafer's Memorial Day picnic in #5, something informal where family and friends would be invited to share congrats but the actual wedding day be separate. I think we might have gotten to know the new family better that way, too. ETA: At the top of page 114 Richard and MA are talking about the eventual move to Dawn's. Sweet father/daughter scene between them when talking about the secret passage. I wonder if Richard ever did check it out himself? I always wish after Jack and Dawn had talked about it in #23, that they had. I can see Richard being interested in seeing something like that, a piece of history, in person.

^ Yes, Charlie got the charm from the SHS student store, which I used to think sounded really cool (that the high school had a store, since my tiny school had no such thing).
I can see Richard being interested in the passage, too. I bet he went in there at some point; I can't see not being curious about it, especially after moving in!

Thanks, Candykane I think my high school had a little stand/booth sort of like at a baseball stadium were you could buy extra gym clothes and maybe a few other school related items. The only actual school store I remember is on Saved by the Bell!

I forgot what the charm looked like? I'm picturing a little replica of the school building but don't think that was it.

^Sadly, MA doesn't tell us. I was curious now and checked. At the very bottom of page 71 and top of page 72 is where MA tells us about the charm she got Sharon. It just says that the charm, "is a replica of the SHS ring" and that Charlie did get it for MA. I do like your idea, Boo Boo that it looked like a school building maybe with SHS imprinted on it.

If it's a replica of the ring, then shouldn't it just look like a ring and not a charm per se?

I quickly skimmed the Marilyn and Carolyn parts after reading Trouble With Twins. In one chapter at the Pikes' the kids are playing Sardines and a tree fort is mentioned as a hiding place. I know Jordan hides in an oak tree in #13 when he is the top secret agent spy. I remember there is a book where the Pike triplets are making a tree fort and will show it to Kristy but no other girl or something like that...what was that book? I am wanting to reread the Boxcar Children Treehouse Mystery next time I'm at the library and that also reminded me of the tree fort. Thanks

I felt bad for MA in this book. I thought her anger in the context of the move was really realistic.. I mean she was only 13 and had never lived anywhere else. That is a big change, especially when you find out randomly through a good friend who thinks it's a good thing and a done deal. Also in the context of her age her concern for Tigger was undersandable. You have so littls control over your life then - someone says we are moving, you move. Someone says give up the cat, you give up the cat. Also I thought Dawn was really unreasonable when they were discussing a good gift for MA to give to Sharon. AM didn't know Dawns mom that well, and I thought her ideas were fine - definitely not reason for Dawm to go off about how MA thought her mom was a slob??? I liked the wedding preparations otherwise, and Dawn and MA going all overboard! Love how "small wedding", I think they even mentioned a small specific number of guests, still means the whole BSC is present . As opposed to some posters, I am a feminist that enjoys Anns random pieces of feminism. I am getting married soon and definitely keepig my name. I am happy some 80s and 90s girls grew up exposed to some of those ideas. Knowing options are available Unlike some others, not a big fan of MAs note to Kristy. It sounded like a goodbye note to me. You will always be my first best friend read to me like... We are drifting apart but I won't forget you instead of like... We are still best friends no matter what which I think was the intention? If I were Kristy it would have made me sad/insecure. Didn't care too much for the subplot tbh. Not boring, but a bit of a rehash. And Dawn pushing MA to share a room with her knowing in the next book Dawn is working to get MA out again, awww I felt bad for MA again! Liked her special moment with her dad and her being given her mom's necklace. What a rollercoaster
